1 Million Mile Tundra - Vic Shepard does 1 Million miles for second time

Actually the EPA difference is minimal. Like 1 mpg difference on the freeway. I have a 2007 Tundra 4.7...and always wished I got the 5.7. Both engines are pretty reliable. Only issue with the 4.7 is the air injection pumps fail with great regularity. That and valve cover gasket leaks occasionally. 380,000 miles so far
I had the 4.7 in a 2WD. Towed at the weight limit, and that was the higher limited for the chassis as it was equipped with all of the tow goodies. With nearly 6500 pounds behind it, the engine lived at a minimum of 2700 rpm and often was over 3k, for hours. At 150k miles in consumed no oil between changes. It was starting to weep at the cam towers and received replacement VC gaskets. The engine and trans were superb, but thirst. 16mpg city and highway in a 2WD. Only mod was a 1” front lift, not to level it, but to get it half way to level, less rake, which ended up being a mistake I haven’t repeated since. Leveling is not helpful for doing truck things.
 
Big question, is Toyota going to give him another free one? I would assume one of the $80k+ LTD Hybrids.

Yeah, that has to be a lot of gas... He needs to link up and be sponsored by the Fuelly app (Heck, go full Ricky-Bobby and throw Waze, Buccees and Bass-Pro shop decals on there)

Imagine how much it would cost to run a BMW 1m miles using dealer service 😲 😲
Generally cheaper than mediocre quality at Toyota dealers.
Best was when I went to the Toyota dealership to check prices for a donut spare wheel and tire for the Sienna. The wheel was, I think, around $130. OK. Tire, $315 (Dunlop). I tell the guy: I paid $129 for 18" (Sienna was 17") for a donut tire for X5 at the BMW dealership (also Dunlop), and his answer was: "yeah, but this is Toyota."

But that 5.7, while thirsty, is about bulletproof, from what I’ve read and experienced.

In 9 years and 85,000+ miles - I’ve done brakes, tires, and oil changes.

That’s it.

Yeah, it’s thirsty, when pulling a trailer with a car on it - I get 10 on the highway. Unladen, I am lucky to get 17. On the highway. About 14 around town. But I knew that when I bought it. I chose reliability over efficiency.

Fuel is a predictable expense. Major repair is not. And a breakdown when far away from home is a huge pain. I didn’t want twin turbos, a water pump inside the block, variable cylinder management, or any of the other MPG tricks that added complexity.
I don't know how is your 5.7 behaving in cold, but I have never seen an engine so sensitive to ambient temperature. If it is below 40, 35, city, 11.5-13 (maybe). Though those years Toyota's need long time to warm up, but 5.7 is actually not as bad as that 2GR-FE I had that needed 10min to start heating.
As soon as it warms up to around 60, I can pull 14-15 in the city.
 
I have a 2GR car, it blows my mind how long it takes to warm up even when not that cold AND pulling hills, common characteristic of that motor though.
Same. 2GR I freeze all winter. Also lots of modern VWAG including Porsche, etc. take 30+ minutes to warm fully. German engines burn a thimble of fuel per hour at idle, and shut off all fuel flow whenever possible when driving, and are just super careful about trying to convert every last erg into motion instead of waste. Take FOREVER to come to full coolant temp, probably even longer than forever for a good oil temp. Flip side is that ALL German cooling systems are OUTSTANDING(!), massively oversided radiators, and Germans tend to spec 40w minimum, which is why all German cars can run all day, every day, continuously at full throttle, and not care.
 
How long until government regulators start slapping carbon taxes on individuals? This guy has burned a minimum of 110,000 gallons of gas, on his own in these two trucks. The feat is very impressive, and I certainly don’t support an idea like I proposed, but advertising it like this will soon draw unwanted attention from all the wrong people.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
Every 18 wheeler is a guy/gal doing it on his own.
