Would it be safe to run 0W30 in a Taco that specs 5W30? 15,000 miles on my 08 with the 6 cylinder engine. Conservative driving style and trying to obtain a 7500 mile drain interval with Mobil 1 product. Maybe even 10,000 miles. Anyone think that this engine can drop down to a 5W20? Looking for a slight gain in gas mileage and a larger OCI. Whadda you guys think? I currently have Mobil 1 5W30 in the block with 6,000 miles on the clock. Heh that rhymed. And the oil is still a slight amber color that has a twinge of graying.

YES there will be no difference on protection. Remember syn oil lasts longer than conventional oil 7,500 the oil(M1) won't even break a sweat.

That, I like. Analysis reports and hard figures are very worthwhile. We do, however, need a few wine aficionado type comments to add a bit of color here!

Mobil 1 0W30 is a great oil, it can be used in engines spec'ed xW30. If you don't tow, then xW20 may be used. I'm using Synpower 5W20 in '00 MB E430, Mobil 1 0W40 is recommended for it. This V8 engine is quieter with thinner oil.

I thought the 4.0L's were speced to use 5W20? Either way im running GC in my 3.4L V6...love it.
My oil cap and manual states 5-30.
The 0w30 is not a thin oil. I would Jump on the Mobil 1 10w30HM and give it a try. Thats even thickerer.
What does the O.M say?

Oh, just saw you had already answered my ? regarding the manual; I would run the "hot" weight that is specified in the manual when under warranty.

Nope....none of the bulletins will pull the 4Runners down to a 20wt. I suspect that the low RPM's of the 4Runner lead to needing a 30wt oil.

If any 20W only redline 5w-20 that will get you the gas mileage, give you some ester "cushion" and its not TOO THIN. OTW I would stay with what your running or go dino. It is a truck and it is a gas pig - you coulda had a V8!

OP, for the most part, you're not going to gain mileage just by using a slightly thinner oil. Truth be told, many 30 weights thin down to a 20 weight anyway.

I'd stick with a 30wt, Mobil 1 0w30 would be a great choice. You won't have a noticeable increase in mileage by going to a 20wt, so why risk it?
