I disagree with this statement. Even at 30*C/86*F (a hot "cold" start), the difference between Mobil 1 0W-20 and Mobil 1 5W-20 is non-trivial...about 67 cSt vs. 76 cSt when using Widman's calculator. And at 0*C/32*F, 5W-20 is a remarkable 400+ cSt, whereas the 0W-20 has thickened to around 300 cSt. I'd much rather my battery and starter have to crank over oil that's only 30x heavier than it should be, instead of oil that's 40x heavier than it should be.


"remarkable" numbers that mean absolutely nothing to start-up, as once at freezing temps, none of them are near their limits of pumpability).

Once started, at freezing, all will fill the galleries at the same rate, and get to the same places.

How does the 0W confer an advantage ?

For fun, you could look at the Mobil 0W, 5W, and 10W30 lineup and explain how the 0W is better....

All things being equal, for Oz, I'd take a straight 30, synthetic, with a modern additive package...IMO it's "better" for a place that never sees less than -11C.

But there isn't such an oil.

I can't get a 10W30 full synthetic, they are all blends

So I use 5W30, as that's where full synthetic, A3/B4, low KV100 for it's HTHS, reasonable Shear Stability Index, moder additive package all get fitted into a single bottle.

It's a "better" package, but not what I'd consider "best"...Delvac 1330 can't compare, as it's the other parts that make the package.
 
My GM product owners manual calls for regular old 5w30 meeting GM spec. Says a 5w30 synthetic oil 0w30 can be used in areas of extreme cold as long as it meets spec. Never been a problem for me ever. GM knows more about their engines than us, and oil companies know more about manufacturer specs than we do. Its gonna be okay

I made it through last winter on Pennzoil Ultra 5w30, including a personal lowest-ever cold start of -27F.

But it didn't keep me from playing around with this winter's oil fill: 50/50 mix of Mobil 1 0w40 EF and 0w20 EP. The mix of these oils calculates out to have a VI of ~180, which is better than Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30, which is only 166.

Yes, I know that a mix of two 0W's wouldn't necessarily pass a 0W cold flow test, but if an opportunity comes up to do a -40F cold start, I'd give it a try.

I wonder if it's true that an unadulterated 0wXX couldn't pass a cold flow test if it is aged.
 
It's posted on another thread here recently but I used to own an 89 caprice 305TBI and i ran 0w30 in that in Texas. It since has been passed along to my brother and he now has it serviced at Midas but it is somewhere over 215,000 miles now and it has never had engine work.

The only reason I used 0w30 was because I didn't over think it like many of us here do, and it was a good topic of discussion, and I guess it still is. That was yearsssss ago. I dont know what the owners manual stated but I didn't care.

That's the funny thing...an aged oil has to be tested against 0W, and if it doesn't make it, then it has to be tested against 5W.

If it's aged, fails 0W, and passes 5W, then it's a compliant 0W...

Would you use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w-40 at $2/qts? I'm tempted to get some for my son's 04 mdx who is in school in TX. Only change oil once a year.

I'm curious as to your thoughts on this mix other than viscosity and VI. From VOA's, the 0w-40 has much more Ca (3000 ppm), Phos (893), Zinc, and Boron (220) than any other Mobil 1 product...and only 20 ppm Magnesium. The 0w-20 EP is heavy on Mg (744), light on Ca (950), Phos (638), Boron (73). I guess you end up with a medium mix of "everything." I can't find any API SN oil with such a mix where every additive/element is represented in significant quantities. How has it worked out?

HA, when I asked about this same EXACT mix on here, I got nothing but abject naysaying, maybe even ridicule from the 'experts', because of the supposed 'horrible incompatibility' between those two oils' detergent packs.

It depends what you're looking for, and what you count as better. You will get incrementally better fuel economy, assuming you're comparing an ILSAC 0w30 to an ILSAC 5w30, assuming that the 0w30 has a higher VI, but you'll never be able to notice it or effectively measure it. And, it would make a great year round oil choice in the right climate.

Conversely, I think it would be monumentally stupid to run an SAE 30 year round in Saskatchewan, and even to switch from SAE 30 in the summer to 0w30 in the winter. I'd use the 0w30 all year as a much more sensible choice.

In reference to your point and Shannow's, I'm curious as to how much more robust the stay in grade requirements are in the ACEA regime. I know it's more robust for the SAE grade, but I'm not sure what the requirements are for cold cranking. I seem to recall Doug mentioning that OEMs and ACEA may be looking at making that a little more robust, too.

Since they are both long life oils to start with, I think the mix will still be a long life oil. But I'm not planning to push the OCI to 15000 miles. 9-10k miles is all I'm planning for. I've not been a fan of Mg detergents in gasoline oils, but Mobil and Castrol are both doing it, so I guess it's alright. Mg detergents are supposed to be better at TBN retention, but also lead to harder combustion chamber deposits than Ca detergents.

As far as the P and Zn content, I'm pretty happy that 0w40 boosts the 0w20 content, but at the stage of life my engine is in, it's probably a moot point. At 238,000 miles, the wear patterns are pretty mature. And the oil consumption has trended up to about 1qt/2000 miles, so I think the rings are probably worn out. But the engine still runs good, and doesn't have any mechanical noises. It just did two track days at VIR last month and seemed to run better after the two days than it did before it. (King-size Italian tune-up, I guess.)

When I first put the 0w mix in, blowby coming out of the crankcase foul air hose seemed to be lower than with the PU I was running before. The engine still has piston slap when cold, just like it has since it was new. But when up to operating temperature, it's still quiet.

That's kind of comforting to know. 5w is still pretty good cold performance.

Mobil 1's AFE's have excellent cold pumpability specs: the MRV of Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 is 13,250, versus the API limit of 60,000. I wouldn't be surprise if an aged version of that would still pass 0w.

I've just been frustrated that 0w30's never seem to have VI's that fall in between 0w20's and 0w40's. Redline's 0w30 has a lower VI than their 0w20, and you could achieve a higher VI if you mixed their 0w40 and 0w20. I may do that sometime.

I did the Mobil 1 mix because I got 5qt jugs of EF and EP at WalMart for $25 each.

Appreciate that information A_Harman. Castrol synthetic pushes the Magnesium a lot harder than Mobil 1. I'm going to Mobil 1 0w-40 next time around to give a boost to HTHS as well as to move away from the Magnesium. It's more like Pennzoil Platinum Euro than it is a typical Mobil 1.

I'm quite sure that it would...I just like the irony of "stay in grade" means "can slip a grade"...

Like you say, it's not mandatory, it's a limit.

I use conventional 5W-20, as I don't believe the advantages of 0W-20 outweigh the additional cost for me. If I were extending my oil changes with synthetic oil, I'd be using a 0W-20 of some kind.

The 0W-40 Pennzoil would probably work fine.

The benefit in using those 0wXX oils is determined in used oil analysis. Just take a look at how many used oil analysis there are for turbocharged gasoline engines using a 0w40 oil, and were never driven in temperatures below freezing.
