This last year (2005) ths Buick Century was built ...3.1L V6 "couch on wheels" calls for 5W-30 on the oil fill cap ... Any reason why I can't run 0W-30 M1 Synthetic oil for a 6500 mile OCI with a Pure 1 filter for average around town driving ? ... With 118K miles on it my mechanic said the M1 0W-30 oil was a very nice all year oil although he felt it was not especially suited for a long OCI - your thoughts ?

0w30 will do well in that motor especially considering the short trips and its good cold flow properties. With purely short term town driving you wont get the oil up to the proper temperature honestly.... if you don't take it out for at least a 30 min freeway drive once ever 1k miles I wouldn't go past 5k with out a UOA.

Should work just fine. 3.1 from gm isn't a hard engine on oil. Lot of my customers with similar vehicles/engines enjoy maxlife 5w30 in their vehicles too. The low temp pumping capabilities of M1 won't necessarily be tested in GA. if you want to run an M1 product, M1 HM 5W30 is another good option. SL rated, with loads of Zn for AW properties.

Will work fine. Engine not a problem but rust is..rusting out rocker panels..any issues with rust yet? Friends 03 is being eaten away at.

OP is in Georgia

No problem at all. In fact, doesn't your manual say you can/should use a syn 0W-30 in extreme cold weather? I think most GM's manuals did...

The oil should be able to handle a 6000 mile OCI. But if its all short trips it may not be able too. If it helps, I am currently running M1 0w30 in our Uplander that calls for 5w30 and its made the engine loud and ticky. Not impressed at all, Ill be going back to SOPUS for sure after this OCI.

My 2002 century rocker panels are taking a beating I tell ya.

The engine runs fine on anything, even if you let it sludge on dino.

Keep up with the cooling system though.

I think some 5w30 synthetics would be more appropriate. Keep in mind that the 0w benefit might not be evident until you reach a certain negative temperature. A high vi 5w30 might be lighter above freezing depending on the product.

Thanks for the replies - the key is tracking short trips - may consider 5W-30 QSUD Dexos 1 rated as well .

I have a '98 Century 3.1 and am considering doing the same. AAP has 5 qts of M1 and a M1 oil filter on sale this month for $33.
