2020 Ford F-150 Lariat 4x4 with 5.0L. 60,000 miles on it.

Can I use 0w-20 in it when it calls for 5w-20? Have a lot of 0w-20 in oil stash for wife’s car, and was curious if this would work without causing any issues.

Daily driver. 20 miles to and from work. A lot of highway miles. Light towing occasionally. S/E part of US.

Thanks so much!

You can use use 5w30 if you desire without any bad effects.

Ford recommends both 0W-20 and 5W-20:

There is no modern engine that recommends 5W-20 but not 0W-20.

Had the same question about my hemi not long ago, 0w20 is safe. In fact many times has a bit better base stock to it. Mobil 1 0w20 EP for example is 70% PAO. So both my vehicles will be running that going forward

The first number only really relates to cold starts. 0w-20 will handle cold temps better than 5w-20, but you will not see this come into play in most areas as even 5w-20 is good down to -25F at least.

Either way, you are perfectly fine running either in your engine. They will both be the same or similar viscosity at operating temp. You would likely be fine even with 5w-30 or 5w-40 as well. You may lose one or two-tenths of an mpg with the 5w-40. That is the only issue I can think that would come from running that.

Use either one without worry

Its maybe not economically wise but it definitely will not have any negative effect. light towing and summer coming, why not try 5w30!

0w-20 and 5w-20 in comparison here…
0w20…
5w-20

You can see the CCS and MRV viscosity for 5w-20 is lower than the 0w-20. So what makes the formulation so different? A higher cSt base stock and less VII for 5w-20? Personally need one of the great oil teachers here at BITOG to explain cause I do not know.
I'd be surprised if there were ANY VII's in either of these oils in the majority of cases.

I would prefer to run the thicker oil in the summer and the thinner oil in the winter. What is the vis of the 5-20 you are running vs. the 0-20 in your stash?

The CCS and MRV viscosity measurement is at a different temperature between those to spec sheets. So hard to compare when those tests are done at different temperatures. They both have the same KV100. The VI is a hair lower on the 5W-20.

The max is stated here but yes there is 5 degrees different for the test. Still max 6200 for 5w and 6600 for 0w
4050 CCS for 5w is a lot better ratio to the max 6200
