08 Civic oil questions

I have only had the car since this summer and had the dealer do the only oil change since I bought it. I called them today about oil change intervals and he told me honda says to go by the dash computer which he said would be around 8,000 mile intervals. He recomended 5,000 mile intervals. On the oil change recipt from them it says "bulk oil".

So I plan on doing around 5-6,000 mile intervals just to be safe. I assume normal oil that I have bought for 3,000 mile intervals isn't up to the task of 5,000 mile intervals? What is a decent economy 5W20 for 5,000 intervals? I usually just buy a jug of the Pennzoil or quaker state at walmart for 13 bucks. But not sure if these are up for the 5,000 intervals.

I think most people will recommend "going by the computer"; it is not like they are using a WAG to determine when it should be changed.

Follow the oil minder, it has proven itself for years. It's a no brainer.If you use standard oil change it @ 15%, with a full synthetic run it to 0. The engine will last well beyond the time when you are sick of the car.

I got a 2007 Civic with almost 90K miles and any conventional 5w20 oil will do just fine for 6-7K miles.

Ok so 8,000 mile intervals, and I can use the standard Pennzoil or quaker state I use for 3,000 mile intervals?

Living in a state where it gets pretty cold during the winter, you might consider using synthetic (for better cold starts) and running it the full Maintenance Minder interval.

The R series engine in the new-er Civics is VERY efficient and are pretty easy on oil however, i wouldn't go 8k worth on conventional oil (following the "Maintenance Minder") unless there's a lot of highway miles involved.

I'd recommend any semi-synthetic oil and follow the MM, changing at 15% oil life.

I'm currently doing 10k OCI's with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20 with my 2007 Civic EX backed by UOA. Going to stretch that a bit more to 12k.

I put Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20 in my daughter's Civic when it was on sale for $3.99/qt. Black Friday. Kinda like wearing a tuxedo to a farm equipment auction.

Run any oil you want, and run it to 15%.

I haven't seen an oil related problem on these Civics with bulk oil(GTX) from our dealership. You will be fine. Just make sure the oil level is correct, check it every so often.

Any modern sm or sn oil will go to 5000 miles or one year without a problem

I wouldn't exactly say that. The new-er civics are nice. I've been putting Mobil 1 Extended Performance into my 07 since day one following the MM, changing at 6.5-8k depending on the meter.

At about 75k i started extending the intervals as per the UOA. Now doing 10k OCI's

Now at 97k and nearing the 105k services where i'll pull the valve cover to adjust the valves and will take pics of the condition of the internals.

You very well could in a Civic, You could go to Walmart and pick up some MotorCraft or Quaker State Ultimate Durability and run the OLM to 0%. That is what I would feel comfortable doing. In your case Quaker State or Pennzoil Conventional I would use for 5K. But that doesn't mean for a second the oils you use couldn't go the distance. It is just my "comfort zone". Many people with many miles will do 8-10K on Pennzoil conventional.

You could easily go 5,000 miles if not 7,000 miles with a good synthetic. Honda engines seem to have an affinity towards Pennzoil Platinum as many oil analysis's here on BITOG have shown.
