Might you consider the new Nissan Versa coming out? Brand new, the car only cost $11,000 (plus $750 destination.) It's got air conditioning and a radio, not as fancy as your CIVIC though.

You're getting a new car with a new car warranty.

It's butt-ugly though, but ROOMY!!!!

Funny you brought this up. My gf saw them, and while she also thinks it's butt ugly, she thinks it's perfectly fine as a point-A-to-B'er.

I'm heading over to see the Civic again; this time to get pics of the fluids so you guys can see what I'm talking about. It may be that I was being overly critical, wanting everything to be perfect. As far as the rough start, it may have been that the guy's dad let go of the key just before it caught, and so it barely sputtered to life. I may just be making excuses, because it is a good price for a convenient car (friend of the family, title in hand, etc.)

Stay tuned for pics

he started right up this time, though it was somewhat not-perfect. I know it's hard to convey over the interwebs, but I'm most of you will know what I'm talking about. To be honest, it starts exactly as I'd expect from a car that needs new plugs. I want to bring my compression tester over, but I'm not sure how he'd feel about his sister's best friend's boyfriend removing the coils, plugs, and a fuse, then cranking the engine over four different times before replacing it all.

The fuids looked a little better than when I checked at dusk the other day. The power steering fluid also smelled fine this time, though the ATF still has that "used up" smell, and will need to be replaced. I was poking around in the engine compartment before checking the fluids, so it may partially have been the grime in the engine compartment giving it the sooty, burnt smell. Anyway, here are some pics. They look much better held up in the bright sun than before. What do you think?

PSF - Looks MUCH better in this light:

ATF - Also looks MUCH better:

Those look acceptable for a 2008 with 62k on it. I'd definitely change everything out and wash down that engine bay.

The damage is minor, looks like normal wear/tear, and a good coat of wax should protect those well enough.

Doesn't look bad. Is it throwing any codes? You need to hook it up to a scanner if its missing like that something is wrong.

NFW a 62k mile Honda motor needs plugs.

No codes and readiness status was "ready" according to my scangauge. Open-loop/closed-loop transition was fast, too. Again, no missing, just a not-perfect start. Motor ran perfectly during the test drive.

Front right corner panel picture...

I can see sandpaper marks all over in the filler, that they left before painting that panel. A good body shop wouldn't allow sloppy workmanship like that.

Add to that, the obvious fit issues as well.

Together, I'd consider all of the work that the body shop did to be suspect, and of questionable quality.

Frankly, I think that Civic at $10,000 +/- is a great deal. The fluids look "normal" to me for the use that the car sees. I think Honda transmission issues are severely over-hyped, as most issues are on the internet. Consumer Reports indicates excellent transmission reliability in the Civic for close to a decade now; I'd wager that a good number of Civic owners are also CR subscribers, so I imagine that if there are trouble with Civic transmissions, it'd be showing up. In fact, the '08 shows full red circles for every category; as pretty much everybody knows, a used Civic will be generally a low-risk purchase.

Regarding the semi-hard starting, is it possible the battery is getting weak? I don't think Hondas are generally known for long-lasting batteries. If the battery is original at this point, it may be getting weak. I replaced the original battery on my '08 CR-V last month, and it has 48,000 miles on it. Our '05 Acura is on its second replacement battery now.

That Civic may need plugs at this point, and could use a re-new on all the fluids. All-in, I think 10 grand for an '08 Civic is a pretty square deal, especially when you pretty much know the history on it. I'm sure you can find other cars out there for less money, but I'm not sure you'll substantially lower your risk, which you have with any car purchase, new or used.

It's easy for me to spend your money, but if she likes how it rides and drives, and you're mostly confident you can TLC-it back into new condition, I'd pull the trigger on it.

We've been looking online for a while now, trying to find a better deal, but haven't come up with much. The few "great" deals came back as auction cars. She likes the way it rides (pretty much exactly like her '03) and the interior is leaps and bounds better.

With respect to the TLC, I'll be looking on the Civic forums for some alloy rims/tire combos for cheap. I was able to snag some '11 STI OEM Enkei rims with nearly new OEM dunlops for $1200 on one of the Subie forums, so hopefully I'll find a similar steal for her - that'll kill two birds with one stone.

We'll still look, but she's getting pretty tired of bumming rides already. Thanks for all of the advice guys. We'll still keep a look out for a better deal, but will most likely go with this Civic by the end of the week.

That PSF looks pretty normal to me given my experience, and I concur with Hokiefyd on the battery if it's just a little slow to crank and then starts/runs fine. The battery in my 07 failed a load test last winter.

After the pics I'm starting to come around $10k still sounds like kind of a lot to me but I haven't been tracking the market. If $10k is a good deal maybe I should sell my car rather than trade it in if I end up replacing it!

We've decided to go with the Civic. We've looked around and couldn't find anything comparable that was worth the risk of driving 4+ hrs for.

On the initial visit, the owner's dad (who is selling it for him) started the car before I could get an initial Fluke reading on the batter. He shut it off after ten seconds of running and it read steady at 12.5VDC a few minutes after that, which is probably mostly suface charge. I didn't think to check again on our second visit. I'll keep the battery in mind for when we pick it up.

The terminals looked fine, but everything in the engine compartment had a layer of filth on it, including the battery. I'll probably clean it up and put it on the Battery Minder for a weekend some time soon after purchase.

I'll change the plugs and all fluids (except the oil, since the OLM is still at 100% and his last oil change receipt from the dealer is from June.) I forgot to mention in my last post that the squeak in the steering was not present during our second visit. I've also found a set of '09 EX-L alloy rims with OEM tires for a good price not too far away.

That sounds just a tad on the low side. I'd probably put a new battery in it either way. They're not all that expensive, and wonky batteries cause weird problems on modern vehicles.

Ya got me before the not-so-ninja-edit. Haha

Yea, I'm going to see if I can save the battery, but it might be better to just replace the darned thing and start fresh with a quality battery.

Those issues look minor to me. Starting problem could be caused by plugs or the battery. I would go for it.

The ATF looks normal for Hondas, they all turn that color after a while, especially if it has only had 1 partial drain and refill in 60k. Drain and refill the transmission a few times with ATF DW-1 and it will be fine.

As of this afternoon, she's got a new set of wheels! Some time soon (hopefully this weekend if we can find time,) she'll literally have a new set of wheels - I found a set of Civic EX-L alloy wheels and OEM tires with 9k miles on them for $350. Some curb rash and one of the tires was plugged by the dealer, but a great deal non the less, IMO!

This leaves us with the option of either selling her steelies or setting them up as a dedicated winter setup with a nice set of winter tires. I was going to ask what all of you thought, but I think I know the answer already!

I've got duty this weekend, but I should have time to detail and take some pics of her new ride by the end of this weekend. Not that any of you guys care, but for things to work out as nicely as they have after a freaking tree fell on her old car, has got me pretty stoked.

After that and when I get time to put'er on a lift, I'll be changing all fluids (except oil,) plugs and giving'er a nice, thorough inspection.

Thanks again for all of your opinions and help. You guys had me looking a lot harder for other options than I would have, so I feel pretty confident in our purchase after finding nil that truly compared and was worth the risk.

Good to hear! And I think a lot of us care. I'll be watching for the pics
