08 Beetle 2.5l Oil Suggestion

Hey guys,

Need to do a LOF on an 08 Beetle 2.5l I5. Looking for something readily available and not too expensive. I believe 5w40 is required, but I see that M1 has a 0w40 at Walmart that I'm sure would be fine. The filter there was ~$9, and from what I'm reading it requires 6.3qts (Thanks VW for making a >5qt sump.)

Suggestions?

The OM specifies a VW 502 spec lube, right?

I think Mobil 1 0w-40 meets that, so would be ideal.

Good to go with Mobil 1 0W40.
Whatever you do, just stay away from Castrol 5W40.
My personal preference:

1. Castrol 0W30 AKA "German Castrol" (You can get it in Auto Zone).
2. Mobil 1 0W40 (Wal Mart or any auto parts store).

Walmart has a good price on M1 )-40 .... $26 for a five quart jug .

Mobil 1 0w40 is fine. A lot of people use it.

I personally use SHell Rotella T6 from Walmart.

the Fram CH9911.... I'm not particular fond of the Chinese made ones. (the old German ones were a real bargain)

I suggest buying a Mann, Mahle, Hengst, or Meyle online instead.

What would be a safe OCI if I went with the T6 or M1, along with say either a K&N, Champ USA, or Wix filter?

the factory recommended 10,000 miles is fine.

Your signature... you use Amsoil synthetic lubricants everywhere... so why not use Amsoil on the bug?

Simply because this is a friends car and wanted something that was easy to get a hold of.

She says that they were charging her $40 for a syn LOF for this vehicle at the oil change place. I don't see how that is possible given the cost of the oil, 6+ qts, plus a filter. The cost makes it hard for me to put much trust in what they are using.
