08 accord using oil?

About 7 months ago I bought a new 4 cylinder 08 accord and although reluctant let the oil censor tell me when to change the oil at 10,000 miles. It that time it needed 1.5 qts of 5W-20 Castrol GTX added along the way. I am at 40% or 6,000 miles into the 2nd go round and again it is using oil.

It does not smoke but is this normal for the new Honda's to use oil?

My Chevy Silverado is at 200k+ and uses under 1/2 qt in 3,000 miles but it does slightly smoke on cold start ups.

Alot of honda motors have an "issue" with burning oil. The k24 in your car is one of them. Try using a heavier oil like 5w30 and see if it helps.

the K24 use some oil at the first run or 2, especially factory fill and stop using oil after 10,000 miles. check again next time!!

Wasn't familiar with this situation. Is this rings or valve guide seating?

I have an 05 Accord with the 2.4l and it consumes around 1/2 qt per 5k miles using any brand of oil. If I could go back in time I would have broken in the engine more aggressively. Some engines consume more oil than others. There is an allowable amount or range you can be that is perfectly normal.

Yes

OP, don't they require 5k changes for warranty until 36k? You could switch to 5w30 to see if that would help.

Im well into the 2nd oil cycle and it is still using oil. My worry is that there could be something wrong over the long run.

Oil changes and all maintenance are performed when the on board censors say its needed.

It isn't uncommon for the Honda 2.4 to use oil if it is driven hard.

This is off-topic, but watch for premature rear brake pad wear on the 08+ Accords. 20-25k is about how long the rear pads will last, 15k isn't uncommon either.

I'm not a run and gun driver but I do fly low. I don't think it has been over 5,000 RPM more than a couple times. My wife and I both work from home so the miles have been mostly from 500+ each way trips at about 80 MPH.

As far as brakes I will keep an eye on it but I am pretty easy on brakes too. I replaced the rear brakes on the Silverado at 180k only because I felt guilty and the rotors & drums have never been turned or needed it.

I've heard that the rears wear out prematurely due to the stability control system.

80 mph is considering hard IMO. I'm not sure if this applies to the Honda engines, but on my Saturn, if I cruise for long periods of time at speeds above 65 mph, the oil consumption skyrockets. For example, in-town driving would give me an oil consumption rate of about 1 qt every 3k (average). 70 mph+ cruising would raise oil consumption to as high as 1 qt every 1700 miles!

I think at 80 MPH its only tacking about 3-3500rpm so that really should not affect any motors oil consumption unless it was misting the oil threw the breather and down the intake but that would have signs of smoking.

My '07 Accord automatic burned 1/4 quart in the first 3000 miles and zero since.

My '00 v6 Accord with 125k on it does not burn any oil between its 6k oil changes. Yes the rear brakes do get replaced every 30-35k.

I've got an '07 CRV, same engine, never seen any drop on dipstick. Had a real easy break in too.

Changed the ff out at 2500 miles and been using yellow bottle since. Change it more frequent than the maintenance minder requires.

I'd stick with the 5w-20 due warranty. Rare you'd see a lube problem with that engine but they would want to see reciepts.

Maybe 6k is your better oci. I'd let the dealer do all the oil changes and maintenance while in warranty. Particulary,if you think there could be a problem.

Waiting til the sensor tells you to change the oil satisfies the warranty requirements? That surprises me, but I haven't bought a Honda since '99, when they required 5k changes.

I'm going to take a wild guess here. If your engine consumes significant oil amounts from the start and continues this trend, then either your rings didn't seat properly or the ring materials were defective. Seating rings properly is accomplished by engine break-in procedures (usually requires you to consciously drive differently than you normally would during the first few hundred miles), and defective rings are replaced under warranty. Onset of oil consumption well after break-in would be caused by accumulation of ring debrie build-up (coking), worn rings, or cylinder liner scoring.

Most of my vehicles bought new have consumed small amounts of oil in the first 2,000 miles; at least one half quart. I had one car, a 91 Taurus, that burned a quart every 2,000 miles up to the 20,000 mile mark, and after than consumption was 0 in the first 5,000 miles of an OCI. I used M1, and changed oil once a year, regardless of miles. Perhaps that vehicle was slow breaking in because of the M1.

Im at 17k with on board oil sensor at 40% so its not due for about 3k. I think I am going to let the dealer change the oil this time and have them do a warranty claim so its in the records. Then when it needs oil I will take it back so they can see.

Driving at higher RPMs will cause some engines to consume oil.

I'm fairly certain that if you kept your speeds below 65 mph, your oil consumption would go away.
