getting an '06 Honda Shadow Aero with 4260 miles...want to do a short change interval oil change and start fresh @ 5000 miles; anyone got a filter cross reference so that I'm not having to buy pricey OEM filters at the dealer? (eg: are there any Purolator automotive filters that will work?) where do I drain & refill the cooling system at on the bike? (eg: are there drain & fill plugs or do I unclamp & remove hoses?) any other maintenance tips/hints/tricks are welcome; thanks

Go to an auto parts store and get a wix filter for it (or Napa Gold if you have a NAPA nearby) and run Rotella in it like previously mentioned.

Wix has a lookup right on their website. I have a Napa Gold on my Triumph right now. Works well, and my bike is known for being picky on filters that wont weep oil.

My old Yamaha Virago took 1.66 quarts with a filter change. Just means its cheap on oil. My new bike takes a gallon exactly.

I loved my Virago - a great range of bikes. My wife loved her 250 as well!

Yep mine was a 250. Bought it right before gas prices went nuts in the USA. Did a sprocket change and routinely got 85 miles per gallon. Only thing I hated about it was how easily the wind tossed me around. For a 250 it was quite peppy versus the Honda Rebel and Suzuki GZ250's I often saw rolling around.

for anyone curious...here's what I researched about filters; I started with the Fram CH6017 motorcycle filter that my local walmart, advanced auto parts, and autozone carry; cross referenced the Fram 6607 group (including Autolite 6607 filter for 'commercial' accounts -- basically a Fram orange can filter painted white and nearly 1/2 the price); other cross references named the Bosch 3330 group & Purolator 14612 group; I bought 2 of the Autolite 6607's to run for a short interval oil change & winter storage this year; I will change over to Purolator 14612's next spring (most likely PureOne's or L-series); if curiosity gets the best of me I'll look over NAPA & Wix filters; my favroite shop will have HiFlo Filtro, EMGO, or Parts Unlimited filters that are applicable (but they are almost 2x the price of a Purolator L14612)

already did an oil change over the weekend using one of the Autolite 6607's and leftover Maxima conventional 10w-40 from my previoud motorcycle (gonna change again @ 5000 miles or late November, whichever comes first); used Super-Tech 80w-90 gear lube in the rear diff (I'll upgrade to a synthetic-blend in the spring); new oil in the spring will most likely be a motor cycle specific synthetic-blend...maybe Suzuki brand, Spectro, Maxima, or Castrol (basically whatever can be bought on sale over the winter); next fluid change to be done will be the cooling system...gonna have to defer this to a shop due to unfamiliarty with the bike
