05 Civic Oil Consumption??

Hi guys-

My girlfriend has a 2005 Civic DX (1.7 5 speed) with 125K Miles. The car is currently running the factory 5W20 but it eats through it relatively quick and there are no leaks.

The car is driven mainly in the city and we are located in Canada. I was planing on switching to a thicker oil, perhaps a 5W40? What oil should I switch to?

Why is it consuming oil? What is the current oil type and weight? Can I assume the oil wasn't changed on time till you took over?
 
Try maxlife 5w30 or Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 first if you can get it. I think petro canada also has an excellent 0w30 available. Recommend shell rotella 5w40 if you do wanna go that heavy.
 
Maxlife is a good suggestion. I would suggest avoiding 5-40 in our winters. Try the maxlife 5-30 and see if that helps.
 
Given the mileage, always (a) replace PCV valve first, and then (b) check thoroughly for leaks, esp. the cam plug on the passenger side of the engine.

Q.
 
Clean the PCV valve, its located to the left of the oil filter. Simply unscrew it and clean it out with some brake clean.

Keep running the 5w-20 after you clean the PCV to see if it keeps burning.

Sucks your not having luck with your Civic. I bought mine from my neighbor with 171k miles and switched it to synthetic, does not burn or leak at all, however i did clean my PCV.

If it still burns alot after you clean the PCV, try Pennzoil High Mileage 5w30 or MaxLife 5w30.

Also Fusilli this car does not have vtec, only the EX and Si models did!
 
Fellow Canuck, try cleaning the PCV Valve, although I didn't had to, after comprehensive tune-up of my sis's Corolla 04 (300K km), was still experiencing high oil loss with oils such as PP, EP, Syntec & SSO. On avg. 3/4 of 1L every 5K km's. Although I have successfully ran GC with 0.5L loss over 10K km, but in winter time (its been terribly cold lately -30C this week 2 times) you will loose gas mileage.

At the moment I'm 5k km into my OCI, currently running Edge w/T 0W20 + 2L of Mobil 1 0W40 with Napa Gold Filter. I believe I'm on a cusp of something great, no oil loss, despite of car seeing repeatedly cold starts and slow 45min long commute to work and back home in stop and go traffic 5 business days a week.

I'm ecstatic at the moment!

If its burning 5/20 maybe its time to try something else.......

Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 would be a good place to start

I have the 2.0 which consumes 1 qt./2,000 miles. Going from 5w20 to 5w30 didn't help much [in my case], but didn't hurt performance or mpg. GC 0w30 though, is too thick for the winter. It takes my car at least 10 miles to warm up even at 0f...and you're in Canada so I would avoid going that thick. Mobil 1 0w40 didn't help with consumption and sluggishness was even worse. I know you have the 1.7, but your results may be similar. I'd try any cheap conventional 5w30 at the next oil change, see the results, and then go from there.
 
I know she neglected the car a bit and the oil was often dirty, then clean. I plan on running a good cleaner oil such as PP and take it from there! After this, I will type the maxlife as you guys suggested.

What do you guys think about my plan?
 
It is worth a shot.

No high mileage oil can undo engine damage caused by neglect and poor maintenance. Trying a high mileage such as MaxLife or Mobil 1 High Mileage at 5w30 or 5w20 would be a good move. If you don't see an improvement in oil consumption, then you sadly might be out of luck.

I sure hope not! I guess we will have to wait and see. If this thing lasts two more years than we're ok as by that time it's time for a new car anyway.

I've read that auto RX is good for ring coke and ring issues,although many say it doesn't clean well.
Kreen is known to help as well.
 
Thanks again Electolover- you reminded me thru that PM how PP is a good cleaner. I'm hoping the aggressive approach of 2- 3K mile OCI of PP really help.
