I ran a 3K OCI of YB 5w20 prior to this test OCI to eliminate any contamination possibilities. Current fill is Formula Shell 5w30. Another regular OCI will be conducted than a test OCI w/ UOA later this year on the Formula Shell 5w30.

Oil was in service from 2/27/2009 until 4/16/2009. Mileage consisted of approximately 80% highway/interstate and 20% city.

Oil - Pennzoil YB 5w20
Oil filter - Motorcraft FL-400S
Air Filter - Fram CA8997 (Changed at beginning of OCI)
Miles on unit @ test - 84,159
Miles on oil - 3,450
Make up oil - 0

Blackstone Comments: The 3.0L V-6 is one of Ford's nicer engines and this one in your Taurus is no exception. Universal averages show typical wear after a 4,800 mile oil run. This oil was in use 3,450 miles and all wear metals read well below average levels. The TBN was 3.0, showing some active additive left. It's almost gone when it reads 1.0 on our scale. No contaminants (fuel, moisture, coolant) was found and the viscosity was normal for 5w/20 oil. Oil and air filtration (see insolubles/silicon) looked good. Try 5,000 miles for the next oil change. This engine can take it!

Actual numbers on left & Universal averages on right:

Aluminum 1/3
Chromium 0/1
Iron 3/14
Copper 1/4
Lead 3/5
Tin 3/1
Molybdenum 2/51
Nickel 0/0
Manganese 0/1
Silver 0/0
Titanium 0/0
Potassium 1/2
Boron 121/47
Silicon 12/15
Sodium 16/18
Calcium 1,826/2,042
Magnesium 9/127
Phosphorus 677/706
Zinc 912/849
Barium 0/0

SUS Viscosity @ 210*F - 52.2/46-59
cST Viscosity @ 100*C - 7.94/6.0-10.2
Flashpoint in *F - 400/>355
Fuel % - Antifreeze % - 0.0/0.0
Water - 0.0/0.0
Insolubles % - 0.3/0.6
TBN - 3.0

Strange new add-pack YB uses - high Boron, but no moly. Don't see that in other oils - moly and boron are usually balanced together.

Nice run - basically boring!

I've noticed on the YB and PP, the 5w-20's carry a high boron pkg. I am suprised to see the TBN so low though? I guess this engine is pretty hard on oil? Or a lot of stop and go city stuff?(My last UOA w/ 5w30 YB in a 03 Corolla had a TBN of 1.9 after 6,200 miles)

This OCI was around 80% highway/interstate and 20% city. The first few weeks of the OCI we had some decently cold weather. Temperatures ranged from
Also, this engine consumes/uses/burns around 1/3 of a quart of 5w20 during an OCI. I am interested to see if the 5w30 will cure this problem.

The Vulcan is pretty easy on oil as far as I know. Could sustained periods of 80-85 MPH on the interstate bring the TBN down faster?

If I return to Pennzoil 5w20 I will be utilizing a 4,500 mile OCI.

I think this is a great UOA. The TBN is very good and has alot left. It probably was only a 7-8 to start with.

Funny thing with my 3.0L Vulcan engine is it is actually using less oil with the 5W20 than it was with the 5W30. It could be the A-Rx treatment, or it could be that the base stock used for the 5W20 is better than the base stock for dino 5W30 that I've always used
