04 Mercury Grand Marquis Suspension Problem F.L.

My mothers babied 04 mercury grand marquis with 40,000 miles has a problem i just noticed on the drivers side the suspention only goes down a little over an inch then stops and feels like metal on metal almost like bottoming out but does not travel down that far...The car sits ok and looking (in the dark with a light) it looks ok but if i push the left side up and down it stops dead but comes back up... Anyone know what this can be? I know one of the front shocks was leaking for a while but i dont know which one...
Also about a year ago i replaced the rack because of extensive play...this car only has 40,000 miles on it and is driven by an 80 year old woman (my Mom)so i know its not abuse

If you had a leaking shock and now this issue.... I would assume probably a shock?

If it goes down only an inch it would be bottoming out all the time just driving down the road! I suspect it will compress further with the G forces of the car bouncing down the street, just not with your weight.

If you feel resistance it could be a shock (likely) or one of the ball joints or maybe one of the sway bar bushings.

Crawl one tire up onto a curb or something. I bet it compresses more than an inch.

2 inches tops and yes you could feel it when you drive it that is how i noticed it
