I like to take it easy on new engine for the first couple of hundred miles to let everything wear in and make sure no problems show up. Then, I like to get oil out of a rebuilt motor after 1000 miles.

Everyone I know with a 5.4 has had what I consider serious problems for fairly young modern engines.

Plugs always seem to blow out, they just can't keep them in the head.

Cylinders score.

Valve trains tick than fail.

Head gaskets fail.

I haven't seen one run over 200k yet without blowing.

YMMV but everyone who works for me owns a truck and the ones always crying are the 5.4 Ford owners. OTOH Ford V6 and V10's never break, those guys never seem to cry. GM owners don't cry to much, Dodge guys have minor problems but nothing major, and no one owns a Toyota.

I like Fords and will probably buy one next, but I wouldn't touch a 5.4 with a 10ft pole.

Hard to believe one side only would be caused by a restrictive filter.

I thought I read, that someone suggested the filter self destructed and sent media into an oil passage.

There really is no "wearing in" to speak of. A new engine is dimensionally stable for many tens of thousands of miles. IF there is "wearing in", then you've got other issues. If problems are going to show up, they'll do it no matter what you do. Maybe a touch sooner, or maybe a bit later, but if there was a flaw in the machining or assembly or a defective part, you're going to have trouble no matter what.

Fire it up, make sure it's vitals are up to snuff and give it [censored]! The reading I have done suggest you've got roughly 20 miles to make the most of your ring seating. Change the oil early and change often during the first 2000-3000 miles. As an example, when I re-built the 3.1 GM in the better half's car, I ran it to operating temp, then changed the oil. Then I took it out and ran it hard through the gears and climbed hills at medium load and RPM. That fill went 200 miles. After that I went 1700 and finally I dropped in Mobil 1 Extended Performance and am mid way through a 7500 mile run.

If I get it back by Friday of this coming week, the plans are to bring it home, put 1 ATV in the bed and another ATV on a trailer and haul both to the hunting club 30 mi from the house for opening day of turkey season! That's only ~2300lb of combined weight traveling on completely flat land, but we can put a little stress on the engine with some spirited launches from stop signs/traffic lights.

Just to close out this discussion...
Finally got the truck back today. in addition to the engine, it needed 3 coils and 1 injector. engine runs smoooooth. Not sure it has the pep of the old engine, but then again, it never had a bunch of pep anyway. Maybe it will getr a little more get up and go as it breaks in (?).
Planning to do a OC at ~1000mi.
Son is glad to get his truck back. Outside now prepping his boat for an all-night fishing trip tomorrow night at the lake near the house.
