I got the dreaded CEL on my 03 Tacoma dubcab 3.4. Toyota replaced the Air/Fuel ratio sensor. I have never heard of this. From what I can tell this is for CA emissions equipped vehicles and is in place of one of the O2 sensors. Can anyone give me any info on this? Is this wear and tear like O2 sensors? Truck has 50K on it. I have had 02 sensors go out but never even heard of the air/fuel ratio sensor. Could anything I have done contributed to it.....bad gas, additives?

Air/fuel ratio sensor sounds like another name for an oxygen sensor to me. Failure at 50K wouldn't be unheard of but it is a bit early for most vehicles.

Toyota does call the front sensor the air/fuel ratio sensor. I don't think it's anything you did or didn't do - I have the same engine in an 00 Tundra, and had the failure about 60K. Was yours covered under any type of emissions warranty? Probably not, just curious. In my particular case, I replaced the front sensor at 60K or so, then around 68K or so, CEL light came on again. This time the code was catalytic converter efficency. Toyota replaced the cat, as well as both front & rear oxygen sensors under the emissions warranty. Good thing - that was a big $$ repair.

Yes, that is the first O2 sensor. I'm curious as to why no warranty coverage? Isnt emmissions like 60 or 80k? I've also heard of them going early, but those reports are few and far between. I can't imagine the job was cheap either. Did you take it to a dealer?

yep dealer and it was $400 for parts and labor.
