So I just got a Jetta GLI (VR6 - 6 Speed) and being an Amsoil dealer I will obviuosly be using Amsoil.

My question though is this;

The manual call for 5-40, but also says that if 5-40 is not available that 5-30 would be fine.

I have both options of course. I would like to use S2K 0-30 for a little better mpg, but maybe I should go with the 5-40 as I tend to drive a little hard now and then. Next year I would like to do some Auto X.

So what are your thoughts (pablo?)

Castrol Syntec 5w40 and Mobil 1 0w40 meet all the VW specs or if you want something more robust, Shell Rotella T SYN 5w40. I personally run the Syntec 5w40.

I would stick with AFL. It's a pretty light 5W-40 and will show better wear numbers than TSO 0W-30. I doubt you will notice a MPG difference with the VR6 in your GLI. Keep this one simple, I guess

Or wait a month for a new 0w-30 with supposedly "superior technology and oxidation resistance".

Thanks, I'll go with the 5-40. You seem to be about the most knowledgeable Amsoil dealer I've come across so far. I enjoy learning from you.

Some of you aren't paying very close attention. I said I'm an Amsoil dealer, so why on earth would I use anything else in my car?

VW is pretty strict with the oil, it's better to use within their specs

but anyways TSO 0W-30 is excellent for any kind of engine as far as i know and is VW approved, and gives more power as well, i wouldn't have problem using that even with autocross

5W-40 is specially formulated for VW engines, so it's a good choice as well, but the S2K 0W-30 gives more power and responsiveness
