I suppose . That's usually on the high side for resale and low for trade in value . Works well for the dealers . Any input for reliability , etc. , be helpful .

You want to pay as low as possible and have the car is the best as possible condition high miles lower the value ,certain things add to the value.

Check Edmunds. They have True Market Value (TMV) prices on their site (for trade-in, dealer sold, and private party sold), and they are usually pretty good estimates.

You could also check nada.com. They are the opposite of Kelly Blue Book - that is, nada is on the high side for trade in while KBB is low. I like to go in with the nada number when trading in a car to use that as leverage. Of course the dealer will want to use KBB, since that is lower and what most people know. Usually we end up around the Edmunds estimate.

At 105K miles the timing belt and associated parts needs rreplaced (idlers, bearings, seals, waterpump, and tensioner. If you have it done its north of $1200.

Also the 03's can can still have HG problems. They are external leaks (mostly) check underneath. Used Foresters can be money pits.

Thanks , this vehicle was purchased by a family member with cash from a SUBARU dealer . We feel they were taken advantage of .

Rear wheel bearings seem to be a common problem on those as well. Haven't seen any good deals on used subaru's around here for a while. They go for more money in the winter time when there is more demand.

They weren't taken advantage of unless they were forced into the deal. It's not the dealers fault the buyer didn't do the proper research.

Yea..pretty much. Now if this vehicle has no problems then the deal is OK

Make sure the coolant is replaced with Genuine Subaru coolant and a bottle of "Conditioner added". I would also suggest a genuine Subaru radiator cap.

The "Conditioner" is some insurance against a HG leak.

That price is about $2K to high for a private sale IMO.

They also bought an extended warranty through the SUBARU dealership for less than a $1,000 . Think it covers 2 years / 30,000 miles(?) . Hopefully that'll cover most of the issues mentioned .

I went with a female friend last year to help her buy a Forester. We found a nice one at a Subaru dealer. An 02, blue, Auto, AC and 90K on it.

Asking price was 14k. Blue book was 10300. We haggled and even walked out 3x, We got there @4p, We brought Beef jerky,Had the salesman eating donuts out of a vending machine by 7p,made them stay an hr and a half after closing.

She got the car for $7878 OTD! Even with that counties 10% sales tax.

I think that 9K is a little high for this car.
Did that amount include the extended warranty, really a service contract?
That should take care of any HG problems, although buyer will still need to spring for the timing belt service.
Buyer will love the Sube in a New York winter, though.
What's done is done, and other than the timing belt and possible head gasket replacement, there is no reason that the buyer can't see another 90K out of this car, which would then have them straight on what they paid for it.

They also put four new COOPER CS-4 tires on it . Figure that's an additional $400+ to be included in the price .
