Im not sure what oil to put in my father truck(02 tundra v8 4.7L). I'm interested in putting in much better quailty oil than he has used in the past and also in extended OCI. Preferably as long as possible except if its so much more expensive to buy that the extra money cant be made back over time.

He drives his tundra 20K+ miles per year. 75% highway, almost -never tows and accelerates smoothly. It can get to -10F here in the winter, so there will be cold starting. The truck has 130K odometer but his current engine has about half that mileage on it.

Which oil do you recommend?
Should i use 5w30 like the manual says or 0W30 or 0W20?
Should i do one of those flushes with the cleaner and new filter before draining and switching to the good stuff?
Should i add a bypass filter?
If i go for a much longer OCI at what point should i get an analysis done?.

Theres plenty of places to buy different oils, we live within 2.5 miles of a napa, autozone, advance auto, carquest, pep boys, walmart, sears and 7 miles away is an amsoil dealer.

The transmission needs to be flushed soon in the truck and the oil changed in my 01 maxima which only gets 7K per year.. Also the air filters changed.

You want to go as long as possible, and you have an Amsoil dealer nearby, just get some SSO 0w30 and run it for one year.

Yeah, 1 year, 20k+ miles. It will do it with ease.

I would use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30, change it every 10k miles and use it year around in MA without problems. Use a top quality filter like the Fram Extended Guard. Both products can be found at WM.

Welcome to the forum :)

Used Mobil 1 0w30 and a whole slew of other oils in my previous 05 4runner v8.

Strongest after 5000 miles (tbn of 4.8) was 0w30 castrol. Next was the Mobil 1 0w30 (4.1)

Id say go with one of those and you could probably go right to 10000 miles if you elected.

the 2uz-fe is a very oil-friendly engine and pretty much anything you put in it, it will like.

If it were mine (I`d thought about getting a Tacoma),I`d just use Valvoline 10w30 conventional and a Toyota oil filter. Me,I`m not a fan of extended intervals.

My vote goes for either Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 and a genuine Toyota filter.

You live in S. Texas and the OP lives in Mass. Syn 0w30 would be better for startup at -10.

Well, I own a 2000 Tundra SR5 4X4 TRD with 173K miles here in Texas. So what I use is not neccessarily what I would recommend for your father's truck. Why the new engine BTW?

First off, check underneath the truck to see how bad it is rusting. Toyota has some recalls for Tundra's rusting in the snow/rust belt, so get all over that one while you can.

Second, since I don't know the maintenance history (and even if I did), I'd recommend that you Auto-Rx everything (power steering, transmission, engine, differentials and transfer case)this summer. That will give you a perfectly clean sheet of music to work with.

If you want to stay with a 5K mile OCI (my preference), then one of the group III 5w30 synthetics will work great (Synpower, AMSOIL XL, Syntec, Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra, Syntec or Edge, etc.)

If you want to extend out to say 10K OCI, then consider the AMSOIL (0W/5w30) line or Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Anything past 10K and you would be foolish not to get into the UOA game. Also, change the PCV valve if not done so recently. It's cheap and easy to replace.

I would go with AMSOIL SVG 75W-90 in the front diff and transfer case, and AMS SVT 75W-110 in the rear diff. DO NOT overfill this equipment or you will get leaks and vent sprays! Let it come back out the fill hole until it stops and you are done.

When you flush the transmission after the ARX treatment, use a quality synthetic DEX III equivalent (Schaeffer's #204 or AMS ATF preferrably). You can use either of these for the power steering too and will work great.

A radiator flush with Toyota Red coolant wouldn't hurt either. Don't use DEXCool, very very bad for your Tundra!

I've owned my truck for almost eleven years now, and have learned a lot about it (likes and doesn't like). I hope this helps.

Also, I've found that the PureOne PL10241 oil filter is a good choice for the 2UZ-FE engine. The ADBV seems to last the entire OCI, and it filters pretty well too.

So it looks like my options would be either

1, a medium grade synthetic with 10K OCI or
2 amsoil with 20K. If i do the latter i should do a used oil analysis halfway through my first 20k OCI to make sure it would actually work.

Im definitely going with the 0w. Why did the old tundras spec 30 and the new ones 20 oil?

I do plan on using auto-rx or something else on all the other fluids.Should i run some injector cleaner in the gas? I'm going to change the oil within a day or two. What do you recommend using to do an oil flush? amsoil flush?Something else i can get at a local store? After i do the flush and oil change i should probably do a realy short OCI to rinse the last of the [censored] out of the engine before i start the long ones. Any disadvantage to using a cheaper chemistry for the rinse OCI than what im going to be running after for the really long OCI?

Do your recommend adding a bypass filter for the automatic transmission?

I found several bottles of militec-1 in the basment. Good idea or bad???

Why did the truck need a new engine at about 65k miles?....
sounds like it has been treated to easy driving conditions.

I get it now...Still 120K seems odd. I had a 2001 with the same engine and never had any issues other than the exhaust manifold cracked just out of warranty.

I always used Mobil 1 5w30 with a Super Tech filter and 10K OCI.

the oil would always come out looking like it could have gone another 5K miles easily. It was rarely very dark in color.
I never had the oil tested, so i am just going by the color of the oil, but it was never even close to being black.

I am also curious. My '00 tundra V8 was sold with 220k, lots of trailer towing. Failures were exh manifolds, fan clutch, spider gears and multiple o2 sensors. 10k oci with Mobil 1 10w30
