02 Silverado 5.3 White Smoke

Have not seen the white smoke but previously the white smoke was random. Will report back in a few weeks or as soon as I see the white smoke...

So far 16-18mpg and no white smoke...I will be replacing the fuel filter over the weekend

Not a shade tree job without air,spring compressor and know how. It is the seal that goes over the guide that the valve stem rides in. I bet its around a $400 job. Google it. I have handled MANY valve stem seal replacements on these engines. Plus what you describe is par for that issue.

400 bucks. What? To replace one. I doubt very much valve guide replacement on a 5.3 chev V-8 is no less than a 1000. Unless a person just brings them the heads and removes and replaces them on his own.
There isn't a single reputable auto repair shop in my city that charges less than 125 an hour. I'm not familiar with the op's location nor how busy the repair shops are.
 
As Steve said, I have never heard of valve guides being a problem on these engines.

No fuel filter inside the tank in my 2002. I believe 2003's and on have the fuel filters inside the fuel tank..
