02 Kia Sportage 87k using some oil about 1/2 quart every 1500 no visible oil leaks replaced pcv valve. Last oil change used Valvoline Maxlife 5w30. Next oil change thinking about using AUTO RX and Castrol High Mileage 5w30... Any suggestions?

87k I think the engine has sludge problems and I want to 'clean' the engine

Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra
They both clean very nicely , also grab a highly efficient filter like Mobil 1 Extended , or PurONE to trap the dirt.

Cheaper suggestions might just be good ol' Pennzoil conventional.

Do you know the oil grade/brand/change interval used during the vehicle's first 87K miles? 87K isn't really high mileage unless it was abused.

The owners manual for my moms 99 sportage has some weird oil recomemdations. They recommend. Thicker oil. 5w30 is only to be used on a very cold area. You could try a 10w30 or even 40.

I wouldn't mind putting synthetic in it like Quaker State Ultimate Durability or Pennzoil Platinum but I'm afraid it would use more oil

AutoRX might help with the consumption, depending on where the oil is getting used. If it's been abused like you say, then it certainly can't hurt and will clean the engine internally. I've always used ARX with either ST or Valvoline.

Is there any sign of leaks underneath?

Maxlife seems to help consumption better than anything I've tried, dramatically at times, so since you've tried it already, if that isn't doing it for you as far as oil goes your other option is thick, and the Castrol GTX HM is about as thick as it gets.

Switch to synthetic if you like, but keep an eye on the oil level. Do your first fill with a synthetic, change it after 1875 miles.
Do a second fill and change it after 3750 miles << if it burns alot of oil during this, try upping the weight to a 5w-40.
