neighbor has a neon with 144,000 miles, sorta rough shape but runs ok. last oil change i used chevron supreme 5W30 with a P1 filter, checked it after about a month, it was low but not on the add mark. I added half a quart of havoline 5W30. today it was time to change it, so just curious i checked it before i changed it. it was on the add mark, and had probably been so for quite a while. I dont think it burns any oil, and it leaks a very minute amount ( not certain). This time i used Valvoline Maxlife 5W30 and a Puro Classic filter. Should the maxlife stop the consumption if its burning oil? I should mention he does have a habit of starting the car with his foot on the gas, to "blow the carbon out" he says. I told him not to do that, but he does it regardless.

Well, the MaxLife may help slow some of the oil useage but, it's hard to say really!
As-far-as your neighbors' starting habit w/foot on the gas...If your neighbor still does this even though you have explained what issues this can cause, well you've done what you can!
Those NEON's had their issues with oil useage but, it's not the only problem that they have.

I believe a lot of the smaller Chryslers tend to lose more oil than most out of the PCV, I'd suggest changing the PCV next time you service it.
Maxlife can slow consumption as well, but it's actually one of the thinner High Mileage oils, Castrol High Mileage is really thick and would be more likely to slow consumption IMO.

The biggest issue with these cars is the timing belt. They are an interference engine, and nobody changes the belt - they go to the scrap heap when it breaks.
These cars are also very gentle on oil, I'd use the cheapest 10w30 you can find with a Mopar, Wix or Purolator filter. You can do a 5,000-7,500 OCI.
I had a very early '95 that I bought new and sold with 185k on it. It didn't burn any oil and still ran good when I sold it.

Had a 2000 neon, it used oil as well. I just put 10w30 of whatever was on sale, and changed it twice a year.
Check the oil once a week. I only had to get rid of mine because the subframe had rust rot holes in it.

"Blow out the carbon" ? What exactly is he talking about ? What "carbon" ? I'd stay away from helping him with oil changes. He will blame you for whatever goes wrong with his car, no doubt.
Never seen a Neon that didnt have a bad thing with the paint LOL
ill change the pcv valve next time, and ill put some Valvoline MaxLife 10w30 and a puro classic, and see how that helps
