The reported lead and iron numbers here are much higher than I have seen in UOAs of motor oil from our '03 Accord V6.

For example, my most recent test was a 5,398 oil use interval at 64,616 total vehicle miles. Aluminum was 1ppm, Chromium 1, Iron 5 and Lead 1. This while using lowly Valvoline Durablend 5W-20. Even allowing for the longer intervals of the UOA at the top of this thread the wear metal trends are dramatically different.

FWIW, flashpoint was reported at 400 deg. C and fuel dilution as

Blackstone uses the open cup method for flashpoint & their fuel % is a calculated value from flashpoint. Dyson's lab uses the closed cup method for flashpoint and FTIR for fuel % detection which is much more accurate. You'll also notice that I have had several UOAs performed by Blackstone with
Driving conditions makes a lot of difference as well. Your iron & lead are definitely lower but aluminum & chromium are not much different. It would be interesting to see what results you received from Dyson Analsyis re fuel % & flashpoint.

What gasoline do you use?

Ben, how long until the ASM UOA?

you said oil consumption is .5qt per 3k? Has that increased from prior oils? Looks like .5qt per 7k was what you had with the Amsoil XL.

Its always been about that. Those 7500 mile OCIs were about 1/4 -1/2 qt low when changed.

ASM UOA will be at about 9k miles. We have 2 cars and ride together to work. So, we alternate between the 2. It will be a while - Feb? However, I should have my 2nd AMSOIL ATF UOA back this week from Dyson Analysis.

Quite right, I meant 400 deg. F. I use whichever fuel is the cheapest, which often means Safeway or no-name brands. Here in CA the state regulates fuel chemistry and additive levels more tightly than the feds do, so I think there is less difference between brands than there might be other places.

I only do a UOA once every year or two for each of our cars as I use it as a quick health check for the vehicle rather than as a tool for obsessing over motor oils

. So don't expect a Dyson analysis anytime soon from me.

Hi everybody, Newbee here and this is my 3rd post here and a little bit of searching.
When do an analysis of an oil, wouldn't you want to know the result of the unused oil first (Fresh off the bottle)just for comparison? My main concern for this question is regarding on the levels of Molybdenum. I know Molybdenum is used for many good reasons but the substantial increase on the secon drain on readline. Or could it be because it came out of two different labs?

6885 miles so far. I changed the PCV valve ~ 1k miles ago. That seems to have helped consumption. I'm changing the air filter tonight.

Just noticed this UOA. My 02 Honda V6 appears to also dilute the oil. So I'm going to 6 mo. 3500 mile oci's and will moniter the AF. Thanks for the info.

Redline will love you for that!

FZ1,
All 6th generation V6 Hondas (and many, many more) will fuel dilute the oil - by design. There are other items to do that will lessen the effect of the fuel dilution...

Thanks, man. I'm going to go 6 month ocis, which are about 3500 miles for me. Check the AF more often. Just changed my plugs at 90k and noticed smoother, more responsive engine. Would welcome any other ideas. Thanks, again.
