I need to remove the radio in the 2001 Ranger. It appears that Ford p/n T87P-19061-A (415-001) is what is used. However, that is turning up as no longer a good p/n. Is there a good part number for this?

Thank you.

Just remove the trim around the radio, climate control and HVAC vents. The radio will come with it. You can pop the radio out of the bezel from the inside.

You can also use 4 appropriately sized nails. Just put them through the holes and pull outward on them.

You don't need to jam them in far, only about 1/2 inch or so. You should be able to feel the springs in there, you just need to pull them in very slightly for it to release the unit.

Trying to remove all that trim after 21 years is asking for broken clips.

I believe the Ford tool is available from most auto stores as a Ford radio removal tool. They look like two u shaped “coat hanger” wires with small knobs on them.
You push them through two sets of holes on the face of the radio, latch in and pull.
It's funny you should mention "coat hanger" - that is precisely what I used to get the radio out of a similar Ford application. I cut two lengths of wire coat hanger and bent each into a "U" shape. Worked like a charm.

Coat hanger trick worked like a charm on those... no tool purchase needed...

I used to use 4 nails, one in each hole. As flexible as coat hanger wire is, I don't think it would have worked well on some of those radios, they have a lot of spring tension. The tool has an indent at the end of it which grabs the clip on the side of the radio, an issue I found with using nails--I had to push the nails out at the same time I pulled on the radio. Using the correct tool makes it a lot easier.

The correct tool has tips on the end to grab onto the radio and pull it out. I'd think a coat hanger would just pull itself out. For five bucks I'd just get the correct tool.

They might even have these at WalMart, Best Buy in my area has them too.

Crutchfield sends them for free with your radio... ;)

Put an iLX650 Power Stack in there while you have it out...

For all the complaints on the coat hanger trick, I never needed anything else on radios of that vintage. Heck, I still have the coat hangers I cut in the the tool box :)

Push in, and then bend them/push them to the outsides and the radio pulls right out.

This. I took out radios of several Fords that I have owned over the years using nothing but a piece of coat hanger.
Save yourself 6 bucks, and use a piece of coat hanger.
The only reason that I have the tool is that Crutchfield sent it with the last radio I ordered for free.

I just removed the (2) 7mm screws and the trim comes off easily. Then unplugged and removed the radio from the trim. Now that I see how it works, the coat hanger might work. You have to angle the wire to the inside (relative to the radio face) to slip into the clip & then angle the wire to the outside so that it draws the clip in to clear the shroud. I'll try it after getting it back in.
