01 Frontier VG33ER - Fall months

I have a stash of 10w30 Havoline Synthetic 10-30. I planned to use this in the summer months in my car, however someone totaled it recently, so it has to be used in my truck. Now there's 8 qts just sitting on the shelf.

So far this summer I've used GC 0w30 Gold, and Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 in my truck. I wouldn't think twice about using 10w30 in the summer, but now that fall (by the time OCI hits) and colder weather is upon us, would it be wise to use the 10w30 in my truck with the soon-to-be colder weather?

I want to make sure I have an oil/filter with the best wear properties (for the temp) as I plan on having this truck for a long time.

The truck sees 85% highway (100mi/day) / 15% city use. I regularly use a 5k interval. My last (and only) UOA is at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubb...83#Post1198983.

How cold does it get in Missouri? What is spec for the vehicle in mind? I cannot imagine it gets cold enough to be an issue there. Maybe the winter is more harsh than I would think. If worried, just leave it on the shelf and use next spring or summer.

The manual specs 5-30 year round, and x-40 above 0F.

It wont take me long to get through this OCI, which will start in mid-Sept. I'd like to use the Havoline Synthetic 10w30 if possible. Temps (high/low) can range from 85/45 (sept) to 60/0 (december) in this area.

Someone else chime in here but 10W30 is probably safe until you get further below 0. This is more of a concern with the folks in the far north and Canada than us.

I kinda have the same truck. Mine is an 04 Crew Cab Long Bed. Mine is unique because it was the last production model made with the super charger. My only mods are a K&N CAI, Gibson catback exhaust, and a high perf chip. On a dyno last month it put out 304 hp. I tow aboat with this thing 4 times a week. I use reg Mobil 1 10w30 in the crankcase, Mobil syn gearlube in the LSD rear, and Mobil ATF in the auto trans. Inside the truck you can barely hear the motor idling and the trans shifting is very smooth. The only time you hear anything is when I floor it and the intake and exhaust roar. My manual also specifies 5w30. When I originally used 5w30 I had some valve ticking. Yes, for you experts out there it was the valves, not the injectors. Went to several Frontier and Titan forums. Many others had the same problem. With any syn 5w30 many had excessive engine noise. Switching to syn 10w30 rectified the problem. So, use it with confidence and sleep well!
