Checked underneath and the sway bar bushings are tight as well as all the other suspension links. Suspecting the struts by process of elimination or the mounts. Car only has 37,000 miles and bouncing the back up and down doesn't show anything. Any other way to test them on the car? Since it happens when loaded, jacking up the back and prying up on the tire wouldn't duplicate the situation exactly. Rock Auto has name brand struts for only $8 and the mounts for $3 (wholesaler closeout) if I have to change them.

Sounds like strut time. I had to do fronts on a 93 cavalier with 38k. Who knows what that old-lady driving was like?

Quick struts are awesome

The premium Monroe quick struts are under $40 on Rock Auto. It makes things so much easier

Not spending $40 when I can do it for $8, on a $3,000 car. (Yea I know nobody here would pay $1000 for it.) Especially when I'm not sure it will solve the problem.

They're decent cars if they have the Mazda (2.0?) engine-if it has the craptastic Ford 1.9 it's not worth fixing. Are you sure the springs are in good shape? The plastic coated ones tend to rust & break in multiple places, another Ford "better idea".

+1
I had a 97 Escort that also had issues with the rear springs.
It was very common to have the bottom portion of the rear springs snap off.
After I replaced my rear springs, the rear end was slightly higher (back to stock height).

I think the ZX2 has the Zetec

The difference is $30, but what about your time? The time savings with the quick struts could easily make up for the price difference

My time is free, or conversely, I get paid for my time when I sell the car, so the difference in the cost of the struts goes straight to my profit.

All of the Zx2's had Ford's 2.0 zetec. I had an 01 Escort zx2 that went 200k with only a thermostat housing and ac relay for repairs. They were great little budget cars.

You only get "paid for your time when you sell the car" if the clunk actually goes away. Get the quickstruts

I loved my 2000 ZX2 with the manual trans. Great commuter. Sold it just under 200k but rust was taking over and started getting a coolant leak. Got $700 for it. Engine was fantastic though for what it was. Not going to claim it was fast by any means
