    Why Don’t Jet Engines Melt?

My career was gas turbine heat transfer cooling of disks, blades, vanes and more. I also wrote software to perform the analysis. Retired ~10 years ago and started my career using punch cards saved in large boxes. Cooled airfoils had the greatest impact on gas turbine development cost and time...

    Oil for Stihl 4-mix questions....

I initially bought a BR600 to move pine needles which requires air velocity. I also bought an optional add-on nozzle that increases exit velocity and turns exit air direction 45 degrees so that air skims over rather than blasting directly into landscape rock. The tube is at maximum extension so...

    Oil for Stihl 4-mix questions....

I run my BR600 at full throttle and lock it there to operate at optimal combustion temperature and not form carbon deposits. On start up, I'll let it idle for 20-30 seconds, then gradually accelerate to full throttle and set the lock. On shutdown, I release the lock, deaccelerate slowly to idle...

    Oil for Stihl 4-mix questions....

I use Honda HP2 at 40:1 mixed with 91 octane E10 fuel (10% ethanol) in a Stihl BR600 (4-mix engine) for yard cleanup every weekend over the last 12 years (about 600 total hours run time). I have had no issues.

What is the Most Unusual Item You've Carried on a Plane, Train or Bus?

My mother-in-law was about to toss a perfectly good Snapper lawn mower. I asked to have it, drained the fuel, oil, removed the wheels and took apart the handle. Everything fit very well in a box and there was no extra fee for weight or size as checked baggage on a return flight. This was in the...

    Auto A/C preventative maintenance?

Check the cabin air filter too. I suggest once a year in normal conditions and every six months in dusty conditions. My 4Runner cabin air filters last about 18-24 months with one vehicle in a carport and the other not.

NEW Vehicle Advice / Recommendations: Anyone? Subaru or Toyota? What says the gang?

"Wife will use it to do short 12 miles round trip work drives 5 days a week." My wife does a lot of short trips too. Therefore, I change oil every 5000 miles in her 4Runner instead of 10000 miles as recommended by the dealer. Refer to the definition of extreme operating conditions when you get...

Over 70 and still wrenching your own vehicles

74 and still doing all the vehicle maintenance. When I was 70, I designed and made a spring compressor to assemble and install front springs and shocks for a 2011 4Runner. Now, 4 years later, I'm not so sure I could remove and reinstall the front struts because KDSS makes the work harder. I also...

    Cable TV and Costs?

My wife selected Cox Communications which overall has been very good for us over the past 20+ years. She spends a few hours negotiating a package deal bi-annually and knows more about it than I do. I think it's expensive, but she wants it. I'm very happy with a recent upgrade to a Cox PW8 high...

This is a follow up to my previous post in this thread. I purchased two 8 TB WD Red Plus drives which spin at 5800 RPM. I wanted quiet over performance. I don't hear the drives spinning, but I do hear occasional actuation. Operating temperature ranges from 28-31 C with one rear case fan...

According to Motor Service, there are 3 potential causes of cavitation... (1) High temperatures and low-boiling impurities may advance cavitation: • Impurities in the oil: water, fuel or deposits from abrasion and dirt • Oil pressure that is too low: unforeseen loss of pressure (for example...
