Floor jack pinch weld adapters. Rubber? Metal? DIY?

I "think" they are the factory holes for holding the body during assembly. It must be the German way. I toured the SC BMW SUV factory last year and they had 4 prongs that the body sat on for all the assembly, at least up to the point the suspensions and powertrain were installed, then they had...

Is this amount of crud in an oil filter normal? What’s in your filter?

That yellow stuff is water mixed with oil, it has no place in the crankcase. Likely plugged PCV system. It looks like lots of short trips in cold weather or you have a bad thermostat that allows the water jacket temp to be too low. Likely it has a bypass closing thermostat and the bypass has to...

Oil Filter Pressure Differential testing (PSID)

RSMike, Assent Nicely done guys!! Excellent data. One question - have you/anyone happen to test the "cleanable" stainless steel screen-filter for capacity and delta-p tolerance? I have seen one collapsed and can't verify any standardized pulse, burst, capacity testing has been done. Thanks!!

Reasons to use a larger filter?

If you wanted to be running extended oil change intervals, then the higher capacity (filtered debris) might be useful, just to avoid cold pressure bypass opening. This the only functional reason I can think of.

    Marijuana on the left coast

It seems the legalization and MJ use/users are not the real threat. It is the conversion of the illegal distribution machine needing to restore cash flow by switching to the seriously addictive and deadly products. The progression happened before, back in 70's. It was/is clearly foreseeable, so...

1971 VW bus. No hose clamps on fuel filter. Fire

I rebuilt a few hundred of these engines and thousands of tune-up/repairs - definitely use the braided hose, it seems to last a good decade, but use some Otiker clamps. If you want a filter put it before the pump, down under body between the engine and chassis fuel line. Yes, it has more...

Oil Filter cut RVAV4 130kmi - What is black grit?

Thanks for your replies! I am original owner of the car, wife's car. The oil has been changed regularly within the 5k miles recommendation. Valvoline semi synthetic was used since new, up to about 115k miles, when I noticed the condition. I switched to EDGE in an attempt to clean it up, maybe...

I found this stuff in my filter . . why?

RAV4 - 2001, 135kmiles, 5 k on this filter, Castrol EDGE oil. I cut the filter can open and have been finding gritty carbon. I can not fathom where it is generated or why. Like bad PCV, or stuck EGR valve. It is not overheating. I have overhauled a few hundred engines, but not modern ones. I...

Oil Filter cut RVAV4 130kmi - What is black grit?

I hope the photo test works. RAV4, primarily short trips, 135k on car, 5k on oil, 12 months, Castrol Edge. I always cut my filters, this started about 3 changes ago. I switched to EDGE from Valvoline 10W40 semi synthetic after finding the first material. No metals in the filter, ferrous or...
