    Automatic Stop and Start

I consider Start/Stop an abomination from several perspectives. I doubt if any powertrain engineer ever said "this will be a great idea to prolong engine life". Over the last 3-4 years since S/S has been widely implemented, my wife and I have made a point of conducting an informal poll of folks...

2006 Magnum R/T AWD Front Axle Replacement

I have a 2006 Dodge Magnum R/T AWD (LX platform) in my little shop; about 170K miles. Not the best maintained vehicle, I've been working my way through a variety of issues. Next up, front CV Axle replacement - the boots failed ages ago, grease long gone and outer joints appear to be binding...

    Choosing Power Steering Fluid

For many years Subaru spec'd Dex III for their P/S fluid; I haved use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF from time to time. As you'd expect, no issues & good low temp performance in the winter.

    2012 chevy equinox transmission fluid

I have a client with a 2014 Equinox 2.4L. At 64K he noticed it wasn't shifting as smoothly as he thought it should; I performed a double drain & refill with Amsoil Signature Series Fuel Efficient ATF. He is very happy with the results..."like new" he says.

Volvo AWTF-80 SC Aisin WS or RL D6

Pentosin claims their ATF1-LV is "fully synthetic high performance Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) for life-time application" etc., etc. While I will not go beyond 30K with it or any other ATF in this trans, I am assuming based on the price point that the Aisin WS fluid is simply a good...

Volvo AWTF-80 SC Aisin WS or RL D6

The TF80SC from 2011-on calls for low viscosity AW-1 (JWS 3324). With my 2014 XC60 3.2 I have done some drain & fills with Aisin WS and for the last year and a half have been running Pentosin ATF 1-LV. No change in shift quality compared to FF with either of these fluids. I have owned a couple...

    Lube Intervals

Typically I grease my suspension parts every oil change...say every 3-5,000 miles, with a quality MoS2-fortified grease. Valvoline Full Synthetic (formerly SynPower) comes to mind, along with Schaeffers 238.

    Nissen Radiator Review

This topic happens to be timely for me: My SIL drives a 2004 Forester XS that I have maintained for many years, but he and my daughter live far away at the moment, so I can only be involved in its' maintenance & repair from a distance. Last week he reported the original Calsonic radiator was...

2015 Ford F-150 ATF and Diffs

Last year I did the same thing for my '16 F-150 when it rolled over 10K miles. Chose Castrol Transmax Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF (which incidentally carries both Dexron VI and Mercon LV OE approvals) and Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-110 to replace the stock 75W-85 FF. I went with the slightly...

Help Choosing ATF For Dodge Pickup

+1 Back in 2003 a friend bought a new Cummins-powered Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 Crew Cab. We were concerned about the 47RE living through the Phoenix heat while pulling a 20K Lb. trailer. I suggested he use C+ and do a fluid & filter change every 50K. Over the 12 years/170K miles or so he owned it, he...

What Toyota Corolla/Matrix/Vibe ATF and Coolant is available at Walmart?

GM specifies Dex-Cool for the Vibe (Walmart carries GM-licensed Prestone Dex-Cool). As others have said, it would be hard to go wrong with the [Walmart-sourced] Maxlife. I bought my daughter a new Vibe 1.8 back in 2009 and have had no cooling system issues maintaining the system with Dex-Cool...

    4EAT Subaru

As mentioned, the 4EAT is a solid trans; I've owned or maintained a half-dozen Subies over the years with zero issues. I've always treated them to fluid + spin-on filter changes every 30K or so, using Amsoil SS or Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. Among the most reliable automatics around, IMO.

    Honda Transmission Fluids

For the past 6 months or so I've been using Idemitsu Type H Plus in my shop when performing routine D&F for my Honda customers.

    ATF SolvesGM Transmission Shudder Issues?

The wording in the GM Tech Center bulletin specifically states "new formula". That plus a new P/N suggests Mobil tweaked the add pack (e.g. friction modifiers) to deal with shudder.

    ATF SolvesGM Transmission Shudder Issues?

The TSB & new fluid are being discussed on many GM forums...as you've surmised it is a "new formula of Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP transmission fluid" to address the lingering shudder issues with the 8L45 & 8L90.

    2019 GM 6.2 AFM

I appreciate technical sophistication & solid engineering. As we discuss here every day, all day: oil quality, filter performance & OCI matters. Reliable performance from complex systems demand it.

    2019 GM 6.2 AFM

The December issue of MOTOR magazine discusses the technical changes of various engines in the 2019 models. The Active Fuel Management system in the GM 6.2 V8 now has one solenoid per cylinder to control oil flow to the lifters, so the operation of each cylinder can be controlled individually...

    4L80E lockup issues

While not specific to the original post, I thought I'd mention (for those who may not be aware) that Sonnax.com is a great resource if you want to learn what the most common problems are for a given transmission. Sonnax makes well engineered upgrades for most automatics, many of which can be...

    Castrol Edge Extended Performance Availability

I use Castrol Edge EP in certain vehicles, and I've noticed lately that there is none on the shelves at the local Walmart, Advance AP or AutoZone; it is still available via Walmart.com. Any thoughts from the group as to why it seems to have disappeared? It is good oil; essentially Castrol Edge...

    2016 Mustang Differential OIl Change

As it happens today I'm changing the differential lube in my 2016 F-150XL 3.5L, which has the 8.8" rear end. Typically I like to dump the factory fill by 10K, refill with a quality synthetic and then leave it alone to 100K or so. This process has served me well over the last 30+ years...never a...
