08' VW GTI 2.0l FSI 5000 miles factory fill

Thanks. Your second paragraph is what I was alluding to. What is the FTIR method? More direct? Are there any labs used by folks commonly posting here that use it?

    PP/5W-30/6500 mi./07 Murano/VQ35DE V-6

If you look at VQ-series UOAs you will find higher than average Si numbers across the board - 18ppm is not out of the ordinary. Still, the engines wear pretty well, and yours is right in there. PP isn't my favorite oil, but it's doing fine. I wouldn't worry a bit. By the way, air filters often...

    Amsoil 10w-30, 3177 miles, Pacifica 4.0L 6

If you look at the first UOA at 6ppm Si and the second at 29ppm, the Si per mile is basically identical, which is consistent with Si being common in break-in for tens of thousands of miles, mainly from sealants used in engine assembly. So I would not be so quick to suspect the K&N filter - I...

    Amsoil SSO 0-30 w/ 16k mi - 04 Toyota 4runner V8

You're right, Steve, that is a BIG difference, from 375/380 to 415 with similar driving and the same lab. It all adds up if you assume that the M1 really is a Grp III/IV oil and the SSO is Grp IV/V - and even then, I wonder if the M1 is mostly Grp III.

Hey, thanks for asking. I have some results back from a 2k run that are better but really still far from good. I'll try to post them soon.

    Amsoil SSO 0-30 w/ 16k mi - 04 Toyota 4runner V8

This is truly an outstanding result - I don't know that I have ever seen such low wear numbers from such a long oil run. SSO is looking like a genuinely superior oil. Keeping in mind that this engine is typically easy on oil, and M1 did do well (though not as well), I am very impressed so far by...

    m1 supersyn 5w30 oci 10040 miles 05 cadillac cts

These results aren't bad, but honestly there is probably some room for improvement. M1, especially in this grade, is known for high iron wear - it is the oil upon which Valvoline bases their claim that their own synthetic give 4x better wear protection. The lead is also a little bit higher than...

    Redline 5w-40 7250 miles 2003 BMW330Ci

No, you're probably right, Joe - that many miles in one month with a lot of highway does make them easier miles, though again with a track day, maybe not easier than average overall. Hard to say. I wasn't really responding to your comment before, just impressed overall. Most BMW engines do not...

08' VW GTI 2.0l FSI 5000 miles factory fill

My impression was that all labs calculated fuel dilution from flashpoint, but that they have different methods for flashpoint measurement, Blackstone's method giving a more favorable (somewhat overstated) result. I think a 390 Blackstone flashpoint would indicate some amount of fuel, but not...

    Pennzoil Yellow 5w30 - 3K - 1999 Civic EX post ARX

Yes, now that I read it again he mentioned that the 3k interval wasn't intentional. I'd run it 7500 miles and consider it safe, personally.

    Redline 5w-40 7250 miles 2003 BMW330Ci

The impressive thing here is that the oil gave the best UOA of any in a long string of UOAs despite being run for a significantly longer duration. Redline has been posting outstanding UOAs here recently even with hard use - my own results in our CR-V and before the coolant issue in our E30 325i...

    Pennzoil Yellow 5w30 - 3K - 1999 Civic EX post ARX

Boring is good. However a 3k interval is not much to judge. You should probably run the oil much longer, 5k - 7.5k for conventional oils or longer for synthetics. Either way, as LT4 Vette has alluded, unless you drive a million miles a year the rest of the car will fall apart before the engine...

    Motorcraft 5W-20 semi-synth. 4816 miles 2008 Ford

Si often stays high for tens of thousands of miles, but I think it is more from sealants than sand casting. I doubt sand from castings would stay in that long, for one thing, and I don't think sand casting is even used on production engines for another. I wouldn't worry about the Si. It isn't...

    Motorcraft 5W-20 semi-synth. 4816 miles 2008 Ford

Strange "0" for lead, especially with the iron at a fairly high break-in level. Does this engine get by without traditional (lead) bearing inserts? And re- Blackstone's comments, does anybody still use sand-cast parts in production engines?

    Red Line 5W-20, 6,504 mi, '97 Honda CR-V

Thanks for the replies everybody. Buster: the oil is still in and I'm planning to run 10k on it. Next time I'll likely run longer, maybe 12k-15k. Pablo/ekpolk: The car is new to us, so this is the first Redline run. Previous oils appear to have been conventional quick-lube changes at...

UOA: 2007 Honda Fit, 8,100kms, Pennz Plat. 5W-20

I'd say Si is more likely residual break-in from sealants used in assembly. Air filters often work better at 40k km than when new. Good numbers, of course. They could possibly even come down somewhat as final engine break-in occurs. I would certainly run the oil much longer.

    Redline-where?

Anybody know the difference between this one: http://www.amazon.com/Line-SI-1-Fuel-Sys...22536744&sr=8-1 and this one: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Line-SI-1-Syst...22536744&sr=8-4 Is the second one just older packaging? Looks to be differently dyed, or is the product actually different?

    Valvoline Durablend 5W30, 9,150 mi, 04 Accord 2.4L

Wow, you have over 9k and they think it would be "adventurous" to go for ten! Why not consider some sort of additive during the run, something that would boost TBN and otherwise re-new the oil, and go for 15k? Would it be worth it? If not, just a nice, even 10k OCI for the rest of the car's...

Do you agree with this statement?

Gary and rg200xxx, I will step out on a limb and tell you here that your logic is completely flawed. Gary, by your argument one could still question Einstein and Heisenberg, not to mention virtually anything that has been learned on this site about motor oil: the bottom line is that either one...
