    Ca vs Mo for cleaning

Just trying to learn about oil: From what I read, Calcium and Molybdenum are used in synthetics to keep engines clean. As an additive, is one of these metals perferable to the other? Occasionally I come across a reference suggesting Moly (at least in some forms) is not so desirable in an engine...

Request synth oil advice for Toyota FJ Cruiser

Tell me a little more. I really am interested in buying an FJ (MT of course). How much was the TRD quick shifter? Did you install it yourself? Indeed city MPG? Etc. Thanks! I bought the quick shifter from the dealer and had them install it when I bought the truck, simply because it was...

I really like the FJ, but it is a thirsty vehicle. I get 15-16 mpg mixed city/hwy. I have not been able to drive a full tank on the highway to see what hwy mileage can be. I have a std roof rack which adds drag, no lift and AT tires. I am aware of the body rip issue - not insignificant but most...

    Redline...

I've been trying to compare stengths & weaknesses between Group IV (e.g. amsoil) and Group V (e.g. redline) oils. I have been reading, looking for references, etc. Can any of you comment on this or else direct me to a reference that might discuss this in some detail?

Request synth oil advice for Toyota FJ Cruiser

As I understand this, for a 30 weight oil, the lower the W viscosity rating, the faster the oil comes to temperature and the less wear on the engine. However, the lower the W rating, the more VIIs that have to be added to the oil to make it behave as a 30 weight...and as the oil wears, shearing...

Thanks for the feedback. One related question: From info that I read, I get the sense that Toyota (& other manuf.) recommend 5W-30 because the "thinner oil" 5W part of the viscosity designation reduces friction and thus improves gas mileage. If true, does this come at the expense of wear on the...

Synth advice requested for Toyota FJ Cruiser

Synthetic does provide benefits while racing or in areas with very, very cold ambient temperatures. GM uses Mobil 1 in the Corvette and certain other models due to the ability to eliminate the oil cooler or because it was needed for correct VVT operation in certain engines. Drain intervals were...

Synth advice requested for Toyota FJ Cruiser

I would expect to use extended drain intervals, longer than typically used for dino, but not as long as suggested by synth manufacturer. I am also under the impression that wear characteristics, volatility, etc are better with synth.

Sorry to have posted this in the wrong section. Having read lots of info on characeristics of dino & synth oils, and having listened to many opinions (biased or not) I have decided synth will take better care of my engine.

I have 4K mi on a new Toyota FJ Cruiser, 4WD, MT. I am looking to switch the engine Dino to Synthetic and am considering Amsoil 0W-30 SSO, 5W-30 ASL, 10W-30 ATM or Redline 5W-30. Regardless of the issue of OCI or cost, does anyone have an informed opinion/advice on these oils for this particlar...
