    Quirky features on your cars?

My work Transit Connect does this and I hate it. If the wiper is frozen and I'm not expecting it on, it can damage things. I'm generally annoyed at engineers who "know better." AC coming on with defrost is another peeve. If I have a cold car and it's 45 degrees out, I'll warm it up with the...

    Charging battery with battery charger?

I was thinking the same thing, per that manual they only seem to want you to charge a battery about 30-40%. Enough to start the car.

Consumer Reports Ranking on 10 year maintenance costs...

Exactly. Rip off a wiper blade in an ice storm? If you bought a CR recommended car, it was a freak of nature and you won't badmouth the brand over it. Buy something they hate? You bet it "wasn't engineered for the elements."

Consumer Reports Ranking on 10 year maintenance costs...

A while back carmakers gamed this system by declaring the 100k mile service an oil change while "the big one" at 105k including the timing belt, transmission flush, etc. Luxury customers like paying money and having the car in for service. Well, maybe the high strung euro models at least...

    Quirky features on your cars?

My 09 Camry adjusts the dash light brightness by turning the trip odometer reset button/ knob! As far as I can tell, the backlit gauges don't dim for the headlights, but need to be backlit to see during the day. They're a nice red/ orange color, good for night vision, but the stereo next to it...

Can a South Carolina 'Total Loss - Salvage' be sold in another state

Vermont won't even need a title as it's over 15 years old. Plus they'll probably be thrilled to have a rust-free southern car they can fix up with junkyard parts from something with Fred Flintstone floors.

Counterfeit Parts More Prevalent Than You May Think

Summit Racing is a Walmart for speed parts. The catalog is a little deeper but they're just a modern day JC Whitney or Pep Boys with a splash of Amazon mixed in.

My mutt was found on the side of the highway in Missouri and trucked all the way up here for someone (us) to adopt. If only she could talk!

Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic 0w-20 5 quart jug @Walmart online $11.49

I literally logged into BITOG for 30 seconds to cruise the rebate section for this exact weight (or 0w16, reluctantly) for my Prii as I was down to only about ten OCIs worth. Don't give up hope, there could be a flash sale again. They seem to be having issues moving product.

Question about Rotella T6 oil for my 84 300SD Mercedes

Exactly this, the Merc owners manual will probably recommend 20w50. Back in the day, passenger car oil would be rated for gas first, diesel second, something like API SF/CD. And they felt that was good enough. T6 5w40 markets itself as ONLY a diesel oil, they gave up on gas certifications...

    Adding Electrics To Small Quad

I dumpster dove a 50cc chinese ATV that had a 12v system, lights, and electric start. I expect anything you find will have interlocks that ground the coil out, and plenty of opportunities to pick up a tach signal. The tach would want a clean 12v source, unless it's a "tiny tach" made for OPE...

    No more Super Tech MP?

I doubt walmart shoppers are looking at micron ratings. The STMP was a "deluxe generic" product. How do you market that? The filter reads 20,000 miles. Who wants that? To the average WM shopper that's way too long. Sell em a product that meets spec they can change out on time (or even more...

any place to go to check if tires are balanced?

One can "chuck" a weight yet still have weights remaining and look balanced. Sometimes you see a "shadow" of grime or corrosion where weights used to be. OP can rotate their tires front-to-back in a pattern to see if they can narrow it down to one or two tires. Walmart used to, might still...

    Battery memory savers still needed?

I had a year 2000 Saturn that needed a radio code from the dealer. That model gave a "pre-code" by holding a few buttons down, but it was a different "pre code" format compared to a 91-99. They couldn't figure it out, and they only sold, like, a couple different cars! Morons. I use a...

Plumbing house repipe, copper or PEX?

My off grid cabin runs off Pex-B. Water tastes great. It tastes amazing in fact! I have a wonderful well there. Pex-B is the stuff you clamp yourself with "CV Boot" clamps (Oetiker clamps.)

    6-month oil changes?

You're fine once a year. If you drove it two miles twice a day for this kind of mileage you should change it, but like you said, you drive it every weekend, fully warmed up.

    Charging battery with battery charger?

You did fine, let it be. Since your car was starting with the loose terminal it was also charging. You just took it a little farther than the automatic process does... which is a helpful periodic battery maintenance thing for desulphation. Now you're done. Do it again in three months if it...
