Canada: Are EFB batteries not readily available locally? Is AGM equivalent?

My old BMW had the battery under the rear seat, and that did seem to contribute to the longevity. On the other hand my Japan-built ECHO came with a Panasonic battery (under the hood) and that lasted over 11 years.

    Oil Selection for 2015 GTI?

Shear in a Euro oil is a phantom that just won't die. Besides, it is highly dependent on the engine. A Euro approval oil isn't using inferior VII, and early every UOA on here that has supposed shear either has significant fuel dilution or is an analysis from somewhere like Blackstone that simply...

79 Ford Bronco 400 - recommend an oil to avoid another spun bearing!

I didn't think so either but that seemed to be the entire point of this thread. Either way, a 3.5+ HT/HS oil will have sufficient ZDDP for his engine and will help to prevent wear.

79 Ford Bronco 400 - recommend an oil to avoid another spun bearing!

HT/HS is more of a must if you're attempting to avert destruction from a material or design defect. Moreso than ZDDP in my opinion.

    2020 Landrover Discovery Td6

With those being Blackstone analyses there is no way to discriminate a viscosity deviation between actual mechanical shear of the VII and fuel dilution. Fuel dilution is far more common than shear of the VII, so I would not suspect shear. Blackstone's estimation method for fuel is often wildly...

Nissan and Toyota are issuing rationing

It’s not really them. They are just complying with what’s regulatory.

    Oil Selection for 2015 GTI?

Perhaps look into the specific technical requirements for both approvals, and see what the actual differences are. Copies of the Afton handbook are still around. You may find that much like Longlife-01/Longlife-04 there is minimal difference between 502 00/504 00 that has any real significance...

LSJr tests and discusses DexosD babymax oils

Understand though that the automaker's "planned/accommodated/designed/accounted for in the system" is based on providing acceptable wear and performance under most circumstances, in accordance with what their objective is to achieve CAFE and EPA rules. As a result it's not wholly a technical...

Unfortunately he cannot grasp some rather basic science. I'd rather be technically correct than anything else.

Do you understand the physics of an oil film?

Toyota GR Corolla ... Now running Amsoil Signature Series 0w-20..

    You really don't know? Clue, it's not a spec. It's a recommendation.

LSJr tests and discusses DexosD babymax oils

Even that’s a bit hokey, it was done more for advertising sake than anything else. The actual standardized tests that measure comparative wear between oils doesn’t take a fleet of taxis and really doesn’t want the uncontrolled environment that they’re being operated in either. “Real world”...

LSJr tests and discusses DexosD babymax oils

For comparative wear? Several ASTM tests for that, some part of the Sequences. None of them are uncontrolled spectrographic analyses and for good reasons. The problem is the wear differences between oils is small, no fully formulated oil has a problem with wear. Therefore the difference is...

What is with the lack of 100% synthetic oil filters? Was Fram the only one making them?

All of which may be true. That’s not what I was referring to.

Valvoline Restore and Protect in 10W-30 Grade?

You’ll have to work with the SAE on that one ;)

Canada: Are EFB batteries not readily available locally? Is AGM equivalent?

That’s what I did in my Tiguan as well.

Valvoline Restore and Protect in 10W-30 Grade?

And unfortunately as we have seen on here, because of the low demand they can be made with inferior base stocks that require increased level of VII over a 5W rated oil. The supposition that a narrower spread always results in less VII is not a universal truth.

Awaiting new Hyundai Theta II Engine Install

If it has no VII like the HPL “no-VII” oils then it would be immune to mechanical shear. Like any monograde, regardless of whether it also qualifies for a multi-grade designation. But few engines have a problem with mechanical shear. Many have a problem with fuel dilution, and that’s not...

Awaiting new Hyundai Theta II Engine Install

No base oils shear. The molecules are way too small. And fuel dilution always the same regardless of the oil, a dilution of a higher viscosity fluid by one of a lower viscosity. The amount of VII can be a factor, cheaper VII on a longer OCI can cause permanent viscosity loss.
