    Mercedes "Disquals" on M1 0/5/10 30

Yeah, all depends on how the oil is designed. Just had a look at the spec sheet for Castrol Formula R 5W-30 (available in Australia) and for a 30 weight oil it meets: ACEA A3/B3/B4, MB 229.1 & 229.3, BMW Longlife, VW 502/505.

    VW oil specifications

moribundman... Hmm... a shame you can't open that pdf file on your Mac. Don't see any reason why. Anyway, that link is just to the crankcase section of the handbook. The whole handbook is available here: http://www.ethyl.com/products/la/handbook/HANDBOOK.PDF Yes, it's a goldmine.

    20W50: How wrong was I?

Well, thousands of cars here in Malaysia use dino 20W-50. It's the factory fill for the national car (derived from Mitsubishi). I haven't heard of a case of engine failure due to the 20W-50. Bear in mind it's hot climate here (86-90 degrees every day)

    Switching to Schaeffer's Oil

Bror: that's a lot of oil coming your way! I wish lubes were as cheap over here. I'd gladly pay $3/qt for a good oil like Schaeffer. Mobil 1 0W-40 is $11.20/qt here!!!

    Retune engine after oil change?

Previously using 20W-50 dino oil and recently changed to 10W-30. Some people have advised me to retune the engine since I'm now using a lower vis oil. One reason being to lower the idle rpm. Previously, the idle was about 900 rpm now it's 1,000 rpm (probably due to the 10W-30). What do you...

    Motul Synergie 6100

Yeah, Motul is definitely more "exotic" than Shell. I'd definitely pay $10 more for it. Here, the difference is much higher.

Optimized usage of petroleum oil grades as a function of ambient temps

Just curious, what would be the basis of choosing the oil weights for the temperatures that you listed? Is there an SAE guide or something to say that for a given ambient temperature the right oil must be so-and-so viscosity or HTHS, etc? This issue is of particular interest to me because where...

    M1 0w40-how is this possible?

The Mobil 1 0W-40 in this thread... is it the TriSyn or SuperSyn version?

    Mobil New Zealand

Okay, so let me get this straight... 1. Majority opinion says that CAFE is responsible for use of lower viscosity oils in USA (xx-30, xx-20). Main objective of CAFE being to reduce fuel consumption. 2. xx-20 or xx-30 oils do not necessarily offer best engine protection. Outside USA, the more...

Ray, thanks for making the calls and replying. My car is an older model and calls for SP2 spec. Mine is made by Proton and costs about $4.50/qt.

    What's the Toughest Test?

MB 229.5 seems like a tough test to pass. Must meet ACEA A3-98 plus pass tests for extended drain + energy conserving.

Any oils rated "Energy Conserving II"?

Been told API has a classification for "Energy Conserving II", but I've not seen any oil with that rating. Anyone know of one?
