    3MP Study?

Just before I was leaving this site today, I thought about the 3MP tests thinking that it was past due for the Amsoil 2k report. I went through the UOAs and didn't find it. I then did a search and found some threads that no longer exist. Are there any new forum rules which forbids posting about...

    76 Lubricants Custom motor oil

In my search for a dyno oil for my '69 small block chevy, I stumbled on this oil with specs: http://www.76lubricants.com/techdata/crankcase/custom9.pdf What really caught my attention was: Zinc: .138% (Does this mean 1380 ppm?) Flash point: 510F VI: 114 (excellent for a straight weight dino)...

How can an oil filter affect the oil pres to the engine?

This has bothered me much with all of the talk about restrictive filters vs. high flow filters. First, I believe we all agree that the oil pump is a positive displacement pump, so it will pump the same amount of oil regardless of the restriction. This oil will go to either: 1) Oil filter 2) Oil...

Restrictive filter starves engine of oil?

In the VOA section, it was said that a restrictive oil filter can starve the engine for oil. The thread is: http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=000709;p=1#000019 Is there any truth to that and if so, can someone explain it to me? Also note that the engine in...

Filter efficiency vs flow with regards to wear

I realize this subject has been hit upon many times in various posts, but since I couldn't find a post dedicated to it, I decided to create a new one. I am of the belief that most filters flow well enough to support the oiling systems in stock vehicles. It appears to me that the majority here...

    Schaeffer's #256 Moly Pure Synthetic 40wt

This is the oil (I think) I want, but I have a few comments: 1) Holy crap, look at that viscosity index: 142 (the VI of #700 15W-40 blend is 145). Also, it as a Vis of 120/16 at 40°C/100°C and a borderline pumping of -30°/-22° (lower than the 20W50 7000 oil). 2) The "NOACK" is using DIN 51581...

    Chevron supreme straight weights

AFter reading a bit here about Chevron, I went to their spec sheets. I was floored at the specs for their straight weight oils. I know most here say that straight weights have no place anymore, but check this out: These look like some serious (and inexpensive) oils for the hot summer climates...

    High ash oils and deposits

Does anybody have any test data on high ash oils and their correlation to engine deposits? I have seen a bunch of responses here that recommend a 15w40 HDMO for older engines which burn oil. Is this really a good recommendation?

Is temp vs vis always linear?

I mean linear on a log scale. If I plot some different oils based on their 40*C and 100*C points given in the spec sheet, can I depend on this to be pretty accurate?

Sulfated ash content in average SL PCMO?

The title pretty much says it all. Does anyone have any sulf ash content numbers for oils rated for spark only?

    Mobil1 10w30 SS in GMC Yukon 5.3L

Mobil1 10w30 SuperSyn 2002 GMC Yukon 21744 total miles (after change) 6100 miles on oil (4000 city, 2000 hwy) I don't remember if this was my first run with the SuperSyn oil. All previous runs had M1 TriSyn since 500 mi. Intersting that the Mag is high for a SS and that the thickened up to 11.3.

Which basestocks burn cleaner, dino or syn?

My engine burns 1 qt per 800 miles. I'm not presently concerned with this consumption. I'd like to know if I should be running a dino or syn oil for less junk around the rings and combustion chambers. I also skimmed through the "which oil for cleaning up a motor" thread and was shocked that...

What would you like to see a VOA of?

I've got a lone kit waiting to be sent in with something. What would you like to see? It will have to either be a cheap oil, or an oil I've got a bit of in my garage. Here is what I have (from my memory): M1 15w50 (SL) M1 10w30 (SL) RP 10w40 (SJ) Penn 15w40 (SL) I'll edit this post if I find...

    Mobil115w50 in an oil burner

I sent this oil out for analysis as I was a little worried about water/antifreeze in my crankcase after an intake manifold re-seal. I got the results and thought I'd share. This is in my '69 Corvette with a 383 driven pretty hard. It burns about 1 qt per 800 miles. Here it goes: Engine miles...

    LS1 oil analysis tests

Someone directed me to this page. They are planning on running many different oils in a Z28 with sampling done at every 1k miles. The link is: http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html

    I clogged my filter

Well, I changed my oil out this weekend and when I inverted my oil filter (M1), not much oil came out. I then looked inside and there was no oil in the center, but this filter still weighs a few pounds. I put a nail in the hole to open the anti-drainback and oil came out. I had 3200 miles on...

Help with oil choice (Penn 10w40, 15w40, or M1 15w50

Well, it's coming about time to change my oil in my old Corvette. When I noticed the price of M1 SS went down from $4.78 to $3.78 per qt, I decided that was what I was going to run. But I'm having second thoughts. My engine was rebuilt about 12k mi ago (since Nov) and I did not ask or get the...

    Temp vs. Viscosity charts?

Does anybody have any "typical" temp vs. vis charts for the different grades of oil? I'd really like to see some for each of dino, group III, and real syn oils.

Oil for old cars (no cats)

I've been reading a bit about all of the oil formulation/additive changes due to emissions and such. I have a car that does not have any cats or sensors that could be harmed. Are there any oils which would be better than the API certified oils in this application? Would a motorcycle oil work in...

Extended drain people, what is your oil filter change interval?

Since there is the "what is your oil change interval" going on in the oil forum, I thought I'd parallel this discussion with oil filters. Personally, the only thing keeping me from doing extended drain intervals is that I strongly believe that a filter should be changed by 3000 - 5000 miles...
