How similar are ESP 0w-20 and 0w-30?

I know that both contain esters, gtl, pao. According to Mobil’s product sheet, the 0w-20 flavor has slightly more phosphorus and zinc. Are the other additives pretty similar? I know that 0w-30 has a much higher HTHS.

Any good model car shops along I-75? All of it, from MI to FL

Tomorrow we leave for a trip to Disney. Leaving from the Detroit area. One of my lifelong hobbies is collecting model cars. Usually the prebuilt 1:18 scale. Mostly Maisto, but I have some higher end ones as well for F1, Indycar, etc. We’re splitting the drive up into two days to get down there...

When to do first ATF drain/fill?

Our Carnival will be one year old tomorrow (in service). We’ll be taking a long road trip in a couple weeks, and when we get back it will have close to 15k miles probably. It has 8 speeds so it is constantly shifting, and I’m thinking that an early drain/fill isn’t a bad idea. Is 15k miles too...

I’m continually impressed by the fuel mileage on our Carnival.

Had a roughly 50 mile drive this morning. It included about 10 miles of 45 mph roads, with some traffic and stop lights. Then about 40 miles of interstate driving averaging about 75 mph, with some slow downs in between. The computer readout said 30.0 avg mpg for the trip. Based on previous math...

ACEA C6 vs API SP (SQ)

I’m still trying to figure out what differences exist between these two specs. They seem to have a lot of the same types of tests. The one that stands out is that for C6, it is advertised as a “stay in grade” oil, meaning that some measure is in place to prevent shear. I’m assuming SP has...

What’s going on with Quaker State Ultimate Protection?

I’m currently on my second OCI of this oil in 0w20 in the Carnival. It’s a Walmart exclusive product, but according to Quaker State’s website, it outperforms the QSFS. When I bought a couple OCIs worth last summer, the 5qt jugs were very new stock, but the single quarts were all from May 2023...

Effect of wildfire smoke on air filters?

This past week, and especially today, our air is very hazy because of the Canadian wildfires. This is the third year in a row where we'll have a prolonged period of poor air quality and visible haze from the fires. It got me thinking what effect this smoke has on the air (and cabin) filters. I...

Someone explain the EZ Pass toll program to me

Just got my bill from our trip to E-town PA last month. I know PA tolls are high but my goodness! $147.04 was the bill. I decided to halve that bill by signing up for EZ Pass and funding it the minimum amount (plus the first year's fee of $3). Even if I don't use it again, it will take just...

The Aston Martin Valkyrie GTP sounds unreal!

Went to the Detroit GP today with my son. Had practice sessions for IMSA, IndyNXT and INDYCAR, along with IMSA qualifying. The highlight of the day though was the sheer menacing sound of the Valkyrie. NA Cosworth V12, no hybrid. Being so close and with so much concrete and buildings adding to...

How to get a better seal on AC line mating surface?

My 2016 Explorer has two AC line connections in the rear of the vehicle that look like the one in the photo (for reference, not the actual part). They are located right above the driver’s side muffler and collect all the salt and dirt and, subsequently, are a failure point because of the...

How’s does vis 100C shear compare with HTHS shear?

Let’s say I have a 0w20. Starts its life at 8.4 cst, and a UOA shows that it’s down to 7.8 cst by the end of the OCI. This is purely hypothetical of course. But say that oil starts at an HTHS of 2.6. How does its shear/viscosity loss correlate with the vis 100C value? Is it linear? Perhaps it...

Why don’t more API/ILSAC oils pursue ACEA/Euro approvals?

Yes, the simple answer is: not their target buying audience. But still, it can’t cost that much. I’ve heard that qualifying for the VW 508/509 spec for example is quite cheap. It’s likely too that many of the API/ILSAC oils (especially in 20 grade) already meet many Euro specs, or are super...

Recommend me a VPN. So many to choose from!

Been looking into VPNs for awhile, and I still have no clear direction on which to go with. They all seem so similar. Some are faster, some have a few more features, etc. A number of them have cheap plans if you buy a couple years at a time, but I still don’t know which one I want. I have a...

Interesting fluid temp observations on our ‘24 Carnival

Yesterday I got a Bluetooth OBD dongle along with the ‘Car Scanner ELM 327’ app for iOS. Silly name, but GREAT app. I can see oil, coolant, trans temps. Plus a ton of other live info. What really surprised me is just how hot this van runs. Hot=efficient, so I get it. For coolant, it settles...

What’s a good iOS OBD gauge app for Kia?

I currently have a Scangauge 2 in my Explorer, that was previously in my old Sedona. I rarely use it for DTCs. Its main use is for extra gauges (trans temp, oil temp, etc). I’m looking for a good Bluetooth alternative for our Carnival, since my wife doesn’t want anything permanently mounted. Her...

Which HK engines/years are affected by bad engines?

Did some searching but I’m still not sure. My mom has a 2016 Hyundai Sonata 2.4 non turbo. Owned since new, and always got Valvoline syn blend 5w20. Still under the 10/100k warranty, has 80 something thousand miles. Has always consumed about a quart over an OCI. Was taking with my dad about it...

    Printable oil change reminder stickers?

Anyone have a link to a template for oil change reminder stickers? The ones that go on your windshield. I note the date and mileage of all our services, but in the Carnival there’s no quick way to see when the last oil change was. Have to fumble thru the menus. I have vinyl sticker paper for my...

    (6) 5qt jugs of Castrol 0w20 EP, $120, Metro-Detroit

Hello all. I’m selling (6) 5qt jugs of Castrol 0w20 EP, dated late 2024 (old label, but Castrol support confirmed it’s still the 25,000 mile formula). I’m past the Amazon return window on these, but I no longer need them unfortunately. $120 for all (6) jugs. Paid quite a bit more than this. This...

    The 'self-sealing' R134A cans are a pain

Had a leaking connection on the Explorer sometime between last fall and this spring. System was completely empty. Replaced said seals and vacuumed the system out, ready to add nearly 4 cans (45 oz). First of all, only two out of the four cans easily emptied their contents. The other two took...

Why is e85 still for sale everywhere?

Who's buying it? Many stations around here (metro Detroit) still sell e85. But why? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't even think many cars are compatible with it. Seems there was a push in the mid/late 2000's for e85 compliant vehicles, mostly by the American brands, but that has fallen away...
