    New old(ish) diesel

Congrats! I’m at the point in my life where I need a new project. Something to tinker with. I’m trying to convince my wife to let me get an older VW TDI of some sort. I have never had a diesel, but I feel like I need to have one. My wife drove an F250 Powerstoke while we were dating… I’d say...

2014 Ford Explorer - Orange (and who knows what) to yellow coolant flush

Yep, just did this myself after replacing the water pump in my 2016 Explorer 2.3L. Came with orange from the factory, but replaced what came out with Prestone AMAM (chemically identical to Motorcraft Yellow). The end result is a very light-colored coolant that is really hard to see the level of...

    Annual Pennzoil rebate; expires 8-31-25

E gift card. Mine took almost a couple weeks from “processed” to actually getting the email with the gift card.

    Annual Pennzoil rebate; expires 8-31-25

Got my gift card the other day, but couldn’t use it online since it has no zip code attached to it. How are you all using your gift cards? Other cards I’ve had allow you to tie a zip code to it, but not this one.

    Homemade Cargo Blocks ...

It’s just like the SpongeBob episode where they buy the TV for the box! Haha. More seriously though, it’s fun using packaging/spare parts/etc for something else. Feels like you’re getting away with something.

    The 'self-sealing' R134A cans are a pain

Had a leaking connection on the Explorer sometime between last fall and this spring. System was completely empty. Replaced said seals and vacuumed the system out, ready to add nearly 4 cans (45 oz). First of all, only two out of the four cans easily emptied their contents. The other two took...

Why is e85 still for sale everywhere?

Who's buying it? Many stations around here (metro Detroit) still sell e85. But why? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't even think many cars are compatible with it. Seems there was a push in the mid/late 2000's for e85 compliant vehicles, mostly by the American brands, but that has fallen away...

What is something you learned about your car after you owned it?

On our 2024 Carnival, I learned just last week that the intermittent wiper speed settings are speed-dependent. Also, when the DTE reads empty, you literally have a gallon or less on this vehicle. All my other vehicles would have multiple gallons when the DTE reads 0 miles. I also learned after...

What is something you learned about your car after you owned it?

I never knew this was a thing until I started dating my wife and she pointed it out to me. And I’m a car person, like most of us here!

    If CAFE/stringent fuel economy/emissions requirements didn't exist....would 0W-8/16/20 exist?

The question posed in the title is actually an intriguing one. Mainly because of other questions it raises. Having regulations has also required the oils to be much better than they used to be, regardless of viscosity. Would the oils we have now be as good if other regulations weren’t in place?

    Castrol Euro 5W40 | 1672 mi | 2018 CRV 1.5 - High Fuel

Wow that oil thinned a lot. Probably has a lot to do with fuel. I’m currently using it in my Explorer 2.3 btw. I’ve never done a UOA but the oil always smells like fuel.

    High RPM to Remove Carbon

According to their own words, it has “2x the cleaning detergents”… compared to what though? Their 87? A competitor’s premium? What’s their benchmark for comparison? Hard to tell with marketing speak like that. I will agree though that some brands’ premium does have more detergents though, I’m...

Wiring Discoveries In An Old House

Our 1953 house had lots of shady electrical when we bought it. My favorite was the fan/light combo above our basement shower. It was ungrounded (of course), not protected by GFCI (eh, who needs it?), and they switched the neutral instead of the hot for the fixture, meaning that there was always...

I now have an AC issue with my Explorer

In addition to a failing PTU, my 2016 Explorer has no AC. Went to test today, as it was quite warm outside… nothing. Compressor not turning. Checked fuses, all okay. Then I blipped the Schrader valve for the high and low side… completely flat. Thankfully, with the help of YouTube, I figured out...

    High RPM to Remove Carbon

I’d be very curious what the oil temps would be like after those 15 minutes. For fun, in my last vehicle, I put the transmission into manual mode so that the revs were right around 4k at about 70mph. Not heavily loaded, just going down the highway. After only a minute or two, oil temp had gone...

    High RPM to Remove Carbon

With rare exception, premium fuel does not have added detergents. Just higher octane.
