Floor Jack - safe to use at an angle?

Interesting post. I was going to buy an Aluminum jack that's lightweight so I can carry it around. Now I'm thinking I should get a heavier steel jack and just deal with the weight. https://www.vwvortex.com/threads/jack-tilts-when-jacking-up.7623266/

Floor Jack - safe to use at an angle?

I think you found the same article I found. That's what gave me cause for concern and my question. Thanks for your feedback.

Floor Jack - safe to use at an angle?

Yes, the pad will be centered on the pinch weld. And there is room for the jack to roll forward as the arm is raised. The rear tires on the vehicle will be chocked.

Floor Jack - safe to use at an angle?

Here is a diagram I just made in PPT. The jack would be pushed in a bit to mate with the pinch weld (not shown quite like that in this diagram, but you get the idea).

Floor Jack - safe to use at an angle?

I have very limited floor space on either side of my parking spot, so I cannot position the floor jack perpendicular to the side of the car. However, I can fit it under the pinch weld at an angle. And there is room for the jack to move on its wheels as the arm is raised. For the handle, I may...

Check the runout on new brake rotors?

I checked the service manual for my Land Rover LR2 and it says the runout spec is 0.003". I'm considering purchasing Raybestos Element3 rotors. I'm impressed that Raybestos indicates the max runout in their product description, but they say their rotor has Lateral runout of 0.004” or less and a...

    CV boot diagnosis on jackstand

I really don't want to give up my OEM axle for a pinhole leak in the boot or a bad clamp. I'm going to pull the wheel and make a second try for a closer inspection. This time, trans in Neutral. I'll also try jacking up the lower control arm to straighten out the drive axle. Thanks for all the...

    CV boot diagnosis on jackstand

I tried turning it but it didn't budge. You would think at that point I would have realized that it was in Park and not Neutral! So that's the obvious solution to inspect the other side of the boot. Forums like this offer that second pair of eyes that we all need once in a while. For my...

    CV boot diagnosis on jackstand

2008 Land Rover LR2. All original OEM CV axles. 168K miles. When I recently had new tires put on, they told me there was a small leak near the large clamp on the outer boot of the front left CV axle. Now it's spewing grease which is very thin in consistency, almost like oil. No clicking noises...

M1 Advanced Full Synth HM 5W30 and M1 Extended Performance Full Synth 5W30

Yes, both of these VOA's are for the HM variants.

M1 Flash Point - how do they do it?

That's a logical explanation, but I think it's very unlikely based on what we know. Oils that we have a high confidence of containing Group 4/5 base stocks don't have this high of a flashpoint at 245C/473F. For example, Amsoil SS 5W-30 has a flashpoint of 220C/428F. And Redline 5W-30 has a...

M1 Flash Point - how do they do it?

For their 5W-30 Advanced Full Synth HM engine oil, Mobil 1 publishes a flash point of 245C/473F on the product specs. This is significantly higher than other Group 3 oils, and even higher than some Group 4/5 oils. What are they adding to achieve this impressive flash point? Could whatever they...

M1 Advanced Full Synth HM 5W30 and M1 Extended Performance Full Synth 5W30

The VOA results are so close to be almost the same when you consider sample variance. The specs on the website show a significant difference in the viscosity where Adv (11.9) is higher than EP (10.6). However, the VOA results contradict this where Adv (11.2) is slightly lower than EP (11.4)...

M1 Advanced Full Synth HM 5W30 and M1 Extended Performance Full Synth 5W30

Attached are VOA's for these two M1 oils. I also included docs from the M1 website showing specs for each respective oil. As of the date of this posting, Walmart is selling a 5qt jug of the Adv for $22.37, and a jug of the EP for only two dollars more at $24.37.

Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum NOACK values

That's a great spreadsheet. I may download it and create a separate column for the grade (e.g., 5W-30) so I can filter on just those oils that match my needs.

Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum NOACK values

@Gokhan I suspected there was a good reason for that, and you would be able to explain it. (y)

Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum NOACK values

I compared the NOACK for a 5W vs 10W and was surprised by the large drop in NOACK for what seems like a small step up in thickness.

Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum NOACK values

@researcher Where are you finding the NOACK for this oil? I just pulled up the latest Product Data sheet on the Castrol website and they don't report it. Neither does PQIA.

Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum NOACK values

Gotcha. I thought (was hoping) there might be some clever way to tell the difference for the general case.

Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra Platinum NOACK values

@Gokhan How to determine if consumption is happening by transport vs. evaporation in this case?
