    2012-2017 Hyundai Accent--Good Car?

The Hyundai Accent and Kia Rio are reliable, basic vehicles that will go over 100k. My only advice... don't top off at the gas station after the pump stops. You will flood the EVAP system, which will lead to the replacement of the EVAP canister, rollover valve, and canister close valve. We call...

    Kia Sorrento 3.3L GDI V6 Owners ?

I work at a Kia dealer. Those engines stay strong as long as you keep up with oil changes and use an OEM Mahle oil filter for the best fit. The only RARE issues I've seen with them are over-torqued or missing head bolts from the factory. This is extremely rare and Kia Techline will approve a...

    Anyone ‘excited’ for API SP/GF-6?

I would be more excited if I had a GDI engined vehicle. Still, I'm glad to see motor oil improving. MPI engines that are easy on oil, like the Toyota 3.4 V6, can take synthetic oils 10,000 highway miles and the engine will still be clean. I only do 7500 though since I do city driving.

Yall know of anyone who does 1k OCI's or

I never had an OCD customer, but there's a Northstar V8 Cadillac that comes every few months to my shop that rarely gets driven. The oil drained looks just as clean as the oil put in! I shined my flashlight under the oil cap and there is not even a gold tinge on anything. It's just as clean as...

Project Farm. Vintage Arco Graphite vs Quaker State.

That 10w-40 Quaker State (at 11:47) had a useless amount of ZDDP. 475 PPM of phosphorus and 581 PPM of zinc. I guess it's a good oil if you got an oil burner and want to keep the cat converter in shape.

FJ Cruiser oil choices and reccomendations.

If I can run 5w-20 in a 5.7 Hemi here in Arizona without getting Hemi tick, a Toyota 4.0 in Massachusetts will most certainly go on forever. Your engine will appreciate 0w-20 in the winter for cold starts anyway. If I was looking for 0w-20, I'd look for Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra Platinum with...

2013 Grand Cherokee front diff fluid

Thanks for the reply! I was just looking up the redline stuff and did want to use it. This 7 year old Grand Cherokee is a cherry with only 46,000 miles. A 50,000 mile change sounded right to me since it is driven hard in town, and even driven up and down mountains on a few occasions. Since you...

2013 Grand Cherokee front diff fluid

Got a 2013 Grand Cherokee 5.7 Hemi AWD with a rear LSD. Looking to change all gear fluids and transfer case fluid soon. Its physical owner's manual makes it clear that the rear is 75w-90 and the transfer case uses ATF+4, but the front diff specifies 75w-140? I looked at Jeep forums, which lead...

    Pennzoil Platinum

PP held up really well on a beater 2002 Toyota Sienna that burnt though over 2 quarts of it over the course of a year and an unknown amount of miles. It was still clean under the valve covers when I saw the cams. It definitely wasn't the oil that was the problem. It ran cold a lot and probably...

    Oil brand you've never used

For gasoline engines, I never used Amsoil, Redline, Castrol, Quaker State, Kendall, Motul, Warren, Total, Liqui Moly, Rotella GT, 76, Phillips 66. I'm missing out on so much! If I had to pick from these, it would have to be Amsoil, Castrol and Rotella GT. The Kia dealer I work for gives me...

Switching back from High mileage to regular.

If you really aren't in a pinch and can spend more than $15, I'd stick to what HM oil you've been using. Changing oil type on a vehicle with that kind of mileage could cause oil leaks, or make an existing leak worse. Not to mention HM oil has more seal/gasket conditioner.

    Castrol GTX Magnatec

Any oil that claims it clings to parts uses ester. Synerlec from Royal Purple is marketed to do the same thing. Magnatec and Synerlec are might be the same additives for all we know.

    Oil Filter Removal

I wonder how this would work on a plastic cartridge oil filter lid that's stuck and rounded, particularly the Toyota ones!

    Left valve cover leaking oil

It's a common problem for most older vehicles. The valve cover gaskets get as hard as a rock where it's closest to the exhaust. They eventually do get very bad, leaking all over the exhaust until you can smell it smoldering. I'd replace both sides and get it over with.

    '02 Toyota Sienna burning oil (3.0 V6).

Finally got to do both valve cover gaskets and spark plugs. The back one wasn't easy! Got a photo of the front with valve cover off. Rear wasn't any different. It's moderately varnished. It's been 1200 miles using Royal Purple HMX (my favorite high mileage oil) and oil level is just a hair...

    0W20 questions?

0w-20 oils will always be synthetic, and any synthetic can go at least 12,000 km (7500 miles) without problems. If it's a GDI engine, I'd probably go 10,000 km (6200 miles). With Amsoil though, 12,000 km is nothing.

    What's your viscosity change threshold?

I look at the Winter rating more. Where I live in Tucson, what's recommended in the manual has always worked. If I were to take a road trip somewhere freezing, then I'll put 0w-xx, with the xx viscosity being the same as what's in the manual. Now, if I was towing, racing, or driving up and...

Engines that actually require Thick or Thin oil?

It's "one size fits all" for engines nowadays. Bearing clearances are very precise in all new engines, and overhead cam engines like lower "W" rated oil since oil needs to flow to the cams on top of the engine quicker in a cold start. 5w-30 has been the go-to for this. Now it's more like 5w-20...
