I've browsed some of the standard ways of sampling oil but highly prefer a really simple method. So, I am thinking of just removing the oil filter and dumping whatever is in there in the sample tube. How well would you expect this to work? Sure, it could possibly give me somewhat higher soot...

Amazing. Almost no iron at all. I believe I have read somewhere that the newer soobs (>1997 ?) have a molybdenum coating on some of the parts (cylinder walls, piston rings maybe?) which is supposed to reduce wear rates and friction. Don't trash Mobil though, I think the price/performance ratio...
