    Approved substitutes for Dexron VI

Careful with the names. Castrol has also a lineup of "TransMax Import MultiVehicle" that is not LV. The one you want is Castrol Transmax Multi-Vehicle Full Synthetic ATF. That's the LV one. I kept my older cars running for years with Castrol ATF (non LV ones), and I maybe partial to it... but I...

    2006 ford explorer 4.0L 5R55S trans removal

In my Fords I always added Lubegard Platinum. I never lost a transmission in cars that lasted about 200 k miles. Towards the end of their lives I was using Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle (instead of Mercon V), I thought it felt shifting a bit better. Castrol says "...most Japanese passenger cars...

    2006 ford explorer 4.0L 5R55S trans removal

The SOHC 4.0L engines are notorious for timing chain rattles, not sure if the issue was completely fixed by 2006. Their history goes back to 1997... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Cologne_V6_engine#Timing_Chain_Problems If is not the V8 Explorer IMO is not worth the time.

    ATF WS

Not that magic, I managed 200k miles on a Ford transmission with Castrol ATF (from Walmart), doing 30k miles D&F. Until was totaled by my teen kid, it was still shifting great. Fluid coming out was just slightly darker than the fresh one, neve got the violet-black color that WS does in my RAV4...

Adding a transmission oil filter on a Honda odyssey 2006

Replace once every 60 k miles is hard to do? I would not trust the in-line filter with my transmission, I would replace the OE one. I mean, you are already removing it, so... why not put a new one back? Anyway, since this is a Honda, I would not cry too much to see it's transmission dead. For...

    NGK plugs at 79,000 miles

I see that on three of them the ground pad is eroded. This is a good time to replace them, to make the life of the coils easier. Larger gap means higher arc voltage and more power dissipated in the coils. Higher coil temperature shortness their insulation life. On any V6, the rear coils...

Is Royal Purple ATF worth it?

I agree, in my case I am relying on reading the manufacturer transmission temperature sensors (Ford and Toyota transmissions). On Hyundai/Kia I didn't research hard enough how to read them (PID codes).

Is Royal Purple ATF worth it?

Isn't the transmission cooler shared with the engine coolant? And anyway the transmission case will get more or less in thermal equilibrium with the engine case, since they are bolted together. In this case the transmission fluid temps should be monitored in relation to coolant temps. I am...

Adding a transmission oil filter on a Honda odyssey 2006

Two filters don't "filter" better than one. Oil goes in multiple passes trough the one filter, so what the second filter ends up doing is: 1 - increase the filters holding capacity. So you could keep those filters longer. I would say that replacing the smaller filter more often is achieving the...

    Wow shockproof went bad fast....

My 2001 Ford Explorer, V8 5.0L, used 75W140 Synthetic in the rear 8.8" diff. They were not that concerned with fuel economy back then ;)

Does synthetic protect better than dino

Because everyone re-labeled their Group II oils as Synthetic Blend. There are no rules, adding even 1% of Group III (that's not a true synthetic IMO) lets them put that label on.

How hot is too hot for motor oil

You are already not complying with warranty requirements. Warranty is not for cars driven in sport events. You think that mechanics are that easy to fool? Is one to have a spirited diving on pavement, other to do it in autocross competition. You need to add an additional cooler. Sure that will...

    Wow shockproof went bad fast....

I have added nano WS2 to the diff fluid (in the last 1/2 qt, before I poured it in). After some 300 miles, I have checked with a thermal gun and it lowered my temps... Probably it did attached indeed to the metal. Didn't open it to see how it looks.

    Do You See the Problem?

One of my used cars had a piston rubber boot with a straight cut on one of the pleats. Like somebody clean snipped that small piece with scissors. That's the small things that you find with used cars... Beauty is that once you fix it (most of them), then you have a trustworthy car. PS: I...

    Do You See the Problem?

Small nick in the rubber boot that let salt and humidity get in there?

    Wagner OEX pads, poor performance

The pad materials have various compressibility factors. Their backing can be compressed by the pressure too. That gives the "feel" of the pedal, the travel. This is elastic compression, once braking pressure is released, they go back to original dimension. Pads with larger surface may exert the...

    Lubegard Red cleaning out transmission?

Personally I found out that Maxlife didn't act perfect in my Toyota RAV4. It has lots of fans here, but I drained it and went to Aisin WS fluid (and added Lubegard Platinum). It's all good now. IMO the Lubegard Platinum should be used with LV fluids, not the Red or the Black ones...

    Tapered Pad Wear

No need to be rude. That product does harden the rubber, and people need to be aware of that, not everyone reads instructions. I won't bother you anymore though.

Rented an Armada while in the Phoenix area

Because it's not a real 4WD, electronically controlled part-time transfer case is not a central differential. Nissan's 4WD system operates in rear-wheel drive when in auto. But it actually dis-engages the front at high speed, even when you press that button. On the other hand, the 400HP V8 and...

    Tapered Pad Wear

They call it brake lube, so by them, it's not just a normal antiseize compound for bolts and nuts. However... I don't use it on my brake jobs. That one that hardens rubber?
