    Particle count

Those numbers are much higher than I would have predicted for a bypass filter, in fact we see unfiltered gear compartments that are cleaner. Do you know if they did a dilution when they did the particle count or if they ran it straight? The reason I ask is some funny things can happen when...

I agree with Dan but I wouldn't try going any farther.

    Compare 2003 Ferrari 575 Maranello and 2000 550 Maranello

That would cost you almost as much as hitting a John Deere combine! I think the combine is about $300K.

Virgin Castrol R4 Superbike Motorcycle Oil

Well that is a good question and one I don't have a good answer for. The particles that we are seeing are easily filterable but I am not sure it is good idea to remove them, in fact we are discussing this with our contamination control people right now. I think it is necessary to determine the...

Virgin Castrol R4 Superbike Motorcycle Oil

Hi Mikey The problem with prefilling is that most people dump the oil into the center of the filter. This is the "clean" side so anything here gets a free ride into the engine without being filtered. If you can put it into the outside the that's fine. Oil flows from out to in so it gets...

Virgin Castrol R4 Superbike Motorcycle Oil

It probably doesn't make a big difference but I do not advocate filling filters, this is based on the amount of contamination I have seen in new oils. I wouldn't loose any sleep over it though. If you are thinking of prefilling diesel fuel filters like a lot of people do that that is another...

Virgin Castrol R4 Superbike Motorcycle Oil

Some of these are additives and look like little pieces of caramel, others are white powdery-looking solids that I'm assuming are additives too. There were a lot of particles that do not appear to be additives and I saw several pieces of metal in some of these oils. Since is it possible to have...

Mobil Chemist comments on AN's in M1.

I don't know about this fella either, he seems knowledgeable but he doesn't seem very sure of himself i.e. says "probably" a lot. That's what I do if I'm not certain about something. Your right 1911, we want the pH in cooling systems to be around 10 with conventional coolant and iron...

2003 Ferrari 575 Maranello, 6,300 mi total, 4,100 on oil

Since we are discussing oil filters and not air filters I didn't feel it was necessary to state the obvious. I am searching for something to backup my statement but I was not referring to bypass condition, I'm talking going through the media. What kind of pressure differential do you see on the...

Multigrade / Straight Weight for Detroit Diesel

They have some very specific requirements for the 2 stoke engines. I would not depart from the CF-2 40 weight requirement. Basically for less than 0.5% CF-2 SAE 40 Sulfated Ash 1.0% max Alkalinity (ASTM D 2896) 7.0 Min You can download the specs from the DD website.

    cSt at 0C?

Well I always heard they used 40C because that is a reasonable operating temperature for hydraulic systems. Don't know but it makes sense.

    So what does "W" mean

Another variation: If there is only one number (SAE 20) it means the lubricant viscosity falls within the viscosity band for 20 weight oil at 100°C (212°F), sometimes called the summer classification. If there is a number followed by the letter W (SAE 20W) it means the lubricant falls within...

Cold start wear vs. hi/low viscosity

I don't know anything about the oils used in the picture. I'm a bit puzzled by the terms 0W30 and Syn Oil as I've not seen any 0W30 that are not synthetic. The cold soak time did surprise me as I've heard people talk about vehicles being harder to start the longer they were exposed to low temps...

Cold start wear vs. hi/low viscosity

I don't know if this is a good place to post this but I though since we are talking about low temp and viscosity it might be appropriate. This also does a good job of showing the "cold soak" phenomena. This slide shows different commonly used oils that were cold soaked for 16 hours at -35°C...

    coolant change interval?

Drain the coolant and refill with tap water. Open the heater control so it's on hot (not the fan) so water will flush the heater core too. Run with the radiator cap off and watch for flow in the radiator. Let is circulate about 10 minutes after you see flow then drain. Refill and repeat the...

    Coolant for 02 Caravan

I think a flush might be in order. Can you inspect the radiator tubes? If they are clean without deposits then a water flush. If deposits are present the use a chemical flush. Make sure the heater is on wide open so the whole system get flushed. Follow with 3-4 flushes of clean water.

2003 Ferrari 575 Maranello, 6,300 mi total, 4,100 on oil

Hi AE I'll keep taking the pictures but you might have to remind me to in case I forget. It will be interesting to see what happens as time progresses. We generally expect oil filters to do a poorer job with time. The smaller openings become plugged and the pressure differential increases...
