    MObil 7500 7500 miles 2002 4 cyl Camry

Hi Haley We frequently see low levels of elements that are not expected and this can be due to a variety of reasons such as noise, interference, etc. In this case I would say there is no antimony additive in this oil. The ones that do have it show levels around 10-30 ppm or so. Sodium can make...

    MObil 7500 7500 miles 2002 4 cyl Camry

We've pretty well covered our bases: Antifreeze retested and confirmed negative. Lead retested and confirmed high - 676 ppm. Microscope shows no metal particles. As others have said this oil does have a sodium additive. It does not have an antimony additive. High lead can come from fuel...

TBN = 3.0, don't know what it is new but this seems a little on the low side. Of course it does have 7500 miles. Cu = 0 Trace of water = no FTIR You guys are making me do a lot of extra work IMHO there is no evidence to support an imminent failure or even abnormal wear for that matter. We...

Oil formulas change all the time and in most cases no one knows. Molakule wouldn't say something that wasn't true at the time.

Now that the new GC stinks, my new oil

You guys should have taken me up on my offer to do the UOA experiment with the new stuff.

Burning used motor oil in an older diesel engine...?

We have some trucks that have an oil replenish system that meters crankcase oil in the fuel. These are 16 cylinder engines rated at 2300 hp. The oil rate can be adjusted from 0.25 to 0.75 percent oil to fuel. Fuel consumption is about 35 gallons per hour so it's not hard to figure out how much...

We also offer discount pricing for larger quantities. Call the 800 number or send me a message for details, we recently had a price increase but I don't have the list at home.

It must not be getting past the rings, I don't know. Usually in cases of over fueling the soot goes up too. This one has me a little puzzled.

    Diesel Generator Oil

The biggest advantage to synthetics in diesel eniges are the benefits seen in temperature extremes. In the lab we don't see significant decreases in wear and the dyno test data we have doesn't show significant increases in mileage. The cases I've been involved with did not allow significant...

Your injectors might be washing down the cylinder walls causing increased wear to the rings and cylinders (high chrome and iron). We see this when people use starting fluid. The normal chrome reading should be about 1-2 ppm and iron should probably be around 20 or so. I don't know what the long...

That chrome is sky high! iron is pretty high too. What did the lab say?

    Complete Mobil 1 VOA Update

I would not consider a value of 1 to mean that it contains moly. The most common levels we se are around 100 ppm.

What is the oil temperature in turbos?

The main thing we watch for is an increase in copper of about 25-75 ppm. When we see this we do a microscope exam to look for particles. Copper is tricky to call because it's commonly involved in chemical reactions so it doesn't always indicate abnormal wear. In my opinion a microscope check is...

    Mixing viscosities doesn't work

Here are the results from an experiment I did a while back to see how oil transfer from hydraulic systems to engines would affect viscosity. An 8.0 cSt (100C) hydraulic oil was added to 15W40 engine oil (and vice versa) and the viscosity charted. When I have time I will repeat the experiment...

    Cut 'em Open

If you are a serious filter cutter then this is the way to go. It's a little spendy at $88.17 but it does a great job and doesn't leave filing or grit like other methods. We encourage filter cutting on every filter removed from service because there is a lot of information in among those pleats!

Hi Bob This is probably more than you wanted but here goes:

Can I re-use an oil sample bottle?

You can but there will always be some uncertainty. If you use a solvent or fuel or starting fluid to remove the oil then it can cause a false positive fuel test. If you use soap then you can get high sodium or silicon readings if not rinsed completely. Hard water can affect the additives...

    volvo s70 t-5 8716 miles on amsoil

It is not uncommon to see very low levels of elements that are not expected. Sometime this is due to interference from other elements or it may just be a noisy signal, the spectrum of a sample of used oil is pretty complex. This a is good reason not to get excited when you see a slight change of...
