    80W90 Gear Oil suggestions

Redline Shockproof Heavy has been used and praised by many Guzzi owners both in the tranny and the final drive box. I do remember an exception--somebody saying it worked better with the light duty instead.

Lost1, I may follow the same path (wait until the bike is "broken in"). However, for now I'm very curious about the oil in the sump, which is what the bike came with. You must have read/heard about "motoman", the guy who has a website where he promotes a run-it-hard break-in style, where...

    80W90 Gear Oil suggestions

Now I remember which brand is the other 80W90 I got: Lucas. Bottle design looks ----, but at least I know the brand has been around for a long time. On the other hand probably everything from Amsoil is good. I may go with it later if I switch to synthetics. Thanks for the tips.

    80W90 Gear Oil suggestions

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about foaming, and it's good to know that Rotella works (and to stay away from Valvo semi). I may go and get the Rotella, I know which store they have it at. Right now I got a bottle of Kawasaki 80W90 for rear drives, and another 80W90 heavy duty that I got...

The OEM manuals are ambiguous about the first service. All the maintenance charts list it at 1000 miles/1500 km, whereas in the text about changing the oil it's 500÷1500 km (perhaps "between"--whatever they mean by that division sign which I quoted exactly). Since the bike is a 2004 model, my...

    Greetings from forum newbie--and questions

Lost1, do you mean: a) you change it first at 1000 miles? (I'm at 700, so this means I should wait until 1000 mi?) b) 1000 after the first change (which according to some recommendations should be either after about 20 miles, or as some manuals say, around 600 miles)? I saw you're an airline...

    80W90 Gear Oil suggestions

Hello again, I'm doing my first change of fluids (bike has about 700 miles) and was wondering if some of you have suggestions about an 80W90 gear oil. I almost picked the Wally's Supertech, but then I had second thoughts, which may be no more than superstition. On the Guzz, the 80W90 goes in...

Thanks for the comments and tips. I agree with Jaybird at least about taking oil recommendations with a grain of salt. After all, that's why they're so many opinions, even in the same dealership. At the same time, like with other things, there's wide range of credibility. This dealership in...

    Greetings from forum newbie--and questions

Oh, forgot this. Today I called a Guzzi tech to ask about the installation of an upgrade part under warranty (I'm sure he's very knowledgeable). Anyway, I took this opportunity to ask him whether I should go with a 10W40 (as opposed to 20W50), as winter's coming. To my surprise, he said no, I...

    Greetings from forum newbie--and questions

Lost1, The Goose has everything separate: engine oil (grade still on debate, with as many versions as owners ); tranny (here there's more agreement on 80W/90; rear drive (same as tranny plus some moly additive). Dry clutch. So yeah, this opens the choices even more as far as engine oil. For...

    Greetings from forum newbie--and questions

Thanks everybody! Very good info. For now I guess I'm going to do my first oil change with Rotella 15W40, since it's been endorsed by so many. Also as I'm superstitious enough to care about such trifles, I'll stay with dino for the first 3-6k miles. Then change to synthetic, as suggested above...

    Greetings from forum newbie--and questions

The syn Rotella 5W-40 has a bit too much ash (over the JASO standard), and this is acknowledged on the Rotella website by their expert advice guy. Also I'd skip the fully synthetic until about 6k--yeah, I know, probably silly break-in-no-synthetics superstition. Also for the Guzzi I have to be a...

    Amsoil at Harley shop

Does the auto Mobil 1 15W-50 have moly? Also how much anti-wear stuff it has? UOA would be interesting. I wouldn't change the oil any later than what the manufacturer asks for (in my case 6k miles), but if a UOA shows that a syn does good enough at that mileage I'd change it at 6k instead of 3k.

    Amsoil at Harley shop

Which Mobil 1 are you talking about, the car oil or the V-Twin one? I'm asking because I'd like to have it ordered in one of the Wally's in the area--I never found the V-Twin oil on the shelf, but the Mobil 1 site lists it as carried by Wally. As for Amsoil, depending of how many oil changes...

    Greetings from forum newbie--and questions

Hello everybody, This seems to be the best real-life info on oils and lubricants. Glad to see motorcyclists are at it again, along with pilots--after all, our oils matter more, right? I've done a lot of research on oil and got some very good expert suggestions--but since we never know enough...
