How do you adapt service schedules to low mileage vehicles?

My elderly mother has a house in the Minneapolis area, but spends most of the year in the Houston area. She keeps a 2008 Chrysler minivan in the garage at the Minneapolis house. She probably averages 1k miles/year on this car. In September 2019, she had this car serviced before heading back to...

When Did Tire Rack Become so Expensive?

I agree. In the early 90s I started using Tire Rack because they were less expensive than everyone. That was pre-Internet. They advertised in car magazines and you bought from them over the phone. Shipping was cheap in those days, and they didn't charge sales tax if the tires were shipped to a...

Looking good! I'd say 10K miles should be no problem.

How easy is your oil filter access?

Yes, my Ram 1500 has the worst oil filter location of any car that I've owned. Like you said, even the plastic bag trick doesn't help much. My Ram is 2WD and the oil from the filter mount drips onto steering components.

    Lifespan gasoline vs diesel engine

I agree about the generalizations presented by others. I had a 2007 Ram with the Cummins 6.7L diesel. At freeway speeds the engine was turning 1800-2200 RPM. I used 5W-40 or 0W-40 oil. Not too different from a gasoline engine. Diesels don't always last longer. I had a lot of trouble with my...

    Post your latest oil change

Good question. I bought this Ram 1500 in July 2021 with 92,000 miles on it. It's the first vehicle I've owned with a Hemi engine. I changed the oil in Oct 2021 at 98,000 miles, using the Redline 0W-20. Fortunately I have not heard the tick or any other odd engine noises (knock on wood). Not sure...

Which car wax out of these?

Of the ones pictured I believe Collinite 845 is the best. I've used it myself and it has very good longevity. What others have stated about Finish Kare 1000P is true. It's possibly the best wax out there.

    Deleted vs Non-Deleted UOA

Removing the emissions components and reprogramming the computer on my 2007 Dodge Ram made a huge difference in oil longevity. 2007 was when Cummins implemented the new EPA standards. Instead of using a urea system, the DPF was "regenerated" by having the fuel injector squirt a little fuel...

    Car Wash Soap...

I like the ones that use real Predator blood, so you know it's good! I tend to use something inexpensive, like the cherry-scented Duragloss Car Wash Concentrate, which is about 25 cents an ounce. If I'm not trying to preserve wax on the finish, I'll use Dawn. Some of these car wash soaps are...

    01 Tahoe rotors

They probably used two different sized rotors, and the caliper design of one or two pistons is the easiest way to differentiate between the two.

    What's your DIY disaster?

About 15 years ago I had a 1996 Chevy K2500 pickup with a 350 V-8. One day I replaced the spark plugs, distributor cap, and rotor. Upon tightening the screws for the distributor cap the plastic base cracked. The fix involved a tow and replacing the entire distributor. My money-saving DIY effort...

    ZF HP8 Transmission Servicing

Why in the world would a transmission fail from using a non-OEM ATF that meets the manufacturer's specifications? For years I used Amsoil universal ATF in my Saab 9-5, not taking the advice of some ninnies on the Saab forum who said my Aisin transmission would fail if I didn't use the...

    ZF HP8 Transmission Servicing

Howdy y'all. I recently bought a used 2016 BMW 550i that has a GA8HP70Z transmission, a variant of the popular ZF HP8 tranny used in a lot of vehicles from the Dodge Charger to the Rolls Royce Phantom. BMW apparently considers the ATF a lifetime fill, recommending no service interval for the...

2017 Silverado -Tranny Fluid Flush - Nightmare scenario

How is this a "nightmare scenario?" I think you're being overly dramatic. Driving 20 miles with no engine oil might rise to the "nightmare" level. I doubt that driving 20 miles with ATF in the engine is going to cause any trouble.

what are the chances of getting out of a traffic ticket?

I'm two for two in Maryland traffic court wins. One was for careless driving, given to me by a state trooper because I was involved in a multi-car pileup accident. Apparently everyone who hit the car in front of them was cited for careless driving. I went to traffic court, made a plea of 'not...
