2002 Expedition Oil Change Suggestions - Mostly Towing

Often the owners manual only suggest thin oil due to CAFE and MPG regulations. Not necessarily what is best for your needs. Towing and putting heavier strain on the engine is definitely worthy of a thicker oil. Thicker oil will give your more engine protection, maybe a bit less MPG. With that...

    M1 Euro 40 Weight & Calcium / LSPI

Thanks everyone, I was not too concerned, but it’s nice to get 2nd opinions.

    M1 Euro 40 Weight & Calcium / LSPI

lol, I hear you. I’ve been through a few Korean vehicles on my own, don’t plan on going back.

    M1 Euro 40 Weight & Calcium / LSPI

From my logging and seeing how the HPFP acts I generally stay around 30 - 35%. I try to make sure I don’t crash my pump.

    M1 Euro 40 Weight & Calcium / LSPI

I’ve been running this oil for quite some time in various vehicles with success. I came access this video, which is interesting speaking to an older formulation and calcium levels related to LSPI. Currently running it in a 23 Tacoma 2GR-FKS with a performance tune, which is both port and direct...

Toyota 2GR-FKS Dual Oil Catch Can Setup

Yes, I’m a running a custom performance tune by OTT / e30 fuel. Both Injen and OTT post dyno’s. I have not put my truck on a dyno, yet.

Toyota 2GR-FKS Dual Oil Catch Can Setup

Same, each can was like $23. Not much $. It is not a lot of oil but X 250k miles it would make a big difference.

Toyota 2GR-FKS Dual Oil Catch Can Setup

2023 Tacoma. 2GR-FKS. This D4S engine is dual injection and even has a “cleaning mode” for the intake valves. Toyota knows how much oil get sucked back in the intake manifold and cakes things up. Believe me, catch-cans absolutely work. You need to maintain them but their effectiveness is well...

Toyota 2GR-FKS Dual Oil Catch Can Setup

1500 miles on the PCV side. Those little specs are carbon.

    Post your latest cold start.

35+. Around 310HP. I also run 93 / e85 mix. E30 for maximum timing. It’s NA, not a lot to be had without a Mugnuson SC. The power band comes on lower, throttle response is greatly improved, I also have TCU tweak for shift points and overall performance. Much better than stock. This engine loves...

    Post your latest cold start.

It’s a good engine. I have a performance tune and Injen intake. She runs pretty strong vs stock

Exactly, they also help reduce fuel dilution.

Toyota 2GR-FKS Dual Oil Catch Can Setup

I would not install them if there was not already documented effectiveness. Especially in the long term. I am stage 2 tuned with an Injen intake and running e30. I do open the her up here and there. I will update and show the results.

Toyota 2GR-FKS Dual Oil Catch Can Setup

I think it will be a decent amount. Probably 85% PCV side. Many users have noted the manifold being obviously coated after only 20k miles or so. This engine does have port and direct injection, but I still like to keep this to a minimum.

Toyota 2GR-FKS Dual Oil Catch Can Setup

Not sure what section to post this in. It is engine oil filtration in a sense. Intake and PCV side hooked up. Looking forward to catching all that junk and keeping the throttle body, intake valves, and manifold as clean as possible.

    Overfilled Engine Oil

Agreed, an oil evacuator will make your life easy. Overfilling can also cause blow-by and clog up the PCV sending more gunk into your intake manifold.

    Synthetic oil dries out seals.

This info started with the very early formulations, it did have a tendency to cause seals to shrink not having conditioners combined with old rubber formulations. Not so much a “myth” but no longer applicable.

    Engine break in.

Yes, 90% of your break-in is completed. Change the oil!

Why aren't more of us using blends?

Blow-by is usually caused by a bad PCV, oil overfilling, or poorly sealed engine. Whether its poor quality rings or excessive wear, it is the pressure in the crankcase that is the origin. Yes, oil weight and quality plays a role, but if an engine is already consuming oil or generally polluting...

Why aren't more of us using blends?

This is true but oil type is generally not going to play a significant role in how much an oil will become contaminated and fully of gunk from blow-by and / or acidic from short drive cycles. I have a lot of short drive cycles in my truck, another reason why I change often.
