Metal flakes in oil, Normal UOAs...

About 30K miles ago I started noticing metal flakes in the drain pan. I figured they were residual when i first noticed them from when a timing chain tensioner broke and the chain was hitting the front cover. Did a UOA when i first noticed them and came back perfectly fine. This engine has...

    Heavier Weight for Older Engines?

Not going to hurt it. You'll get people on the ford forums all day long argue about how a 5w30 will destroy your engine because of clearances etc... Try it out and see how the engine likes it! 5w30 should do pretty good though.

I agree about blackstone and the fuel. I meant to say that the darkening of the oil on the SN + variant doesn't mean anything.

One thing about the SN + version, the engine seemed quieter, but the oil darkened quicker than the old version. Not that that is indicative of a issue. The shear is disappointing. Maybe I can find the SN version and retest and see if it sheared.

OK to reply to the comments --- I think the high Si is because I took the sample from the filter as I was loosening it. I may have got some dirt in because it is in a really strange position. I forgot to get it on the drain. Also, no al in the filters. I think i found a single spec before...

As far as environment, I am in the mojave desert. This run saw 100*F and as low as 35*F and everything in between in about 2 months. Driving habits.... Most of the time normal.. I tend to have a heavy foot on it sometimes though.

I agree the big ones wouldn't, but if I had a issue where big ones were being produced, id have loss of oil pressure and a lot of noise. Oil PSI is excellent. (20 hot idle and around 70 @3K.) Has a little lifter noise but its a 200K engine.

It did shear, and it wasn't lowered by fuel dilution. This is the SN Plus version as well.

Little bit ago at 186K miles when I got the truck, one of the timing chain tensioners was busted and the chain was beating the timing cover up. 3000 mile oil changes since and never really looked for shavings until the last 3 changes and sure enough I found some. Non ferrous and appeared to be...
