It's called the "car wash syndrome", a known phenomenon. I've experienced it and thought for sure the timing belt had broken because it was spinning over so fast.

A couple of more pics and observations. The base plate is a beast, heavy and thick. The gasket too is large and you'll never double-gasket the thing, which I had to pry off with a knife.

I couldn't find any additional layers, at least with that level of construction (tissue paper-like). Pic here shows maybe better the contrast between the materials.
