Please help me decide on an oil for my 2021 BMW 530e

Thanks, but I did not mean to imply that the climate in which I reside is a concern. I was trying to communicate the exact opposite - that cold starts aren't going to be a problem. I don't really care to quibble over semantics, but exhausting a full tank of fuel in one evening running up and...

Please help me decide on an oil for my 2021 BMW 530e

My use case: Hot climate. Sees "severe service" at the canyon on the weekends. The owner's manual states that 0w-20 is the only acceptable viscosity for this particular engine (B46B20D), but TIS states that anything from LL-01 to LL-17FE+ is valid. My only condition is that I'd prefer the oil...

Stanford research: EV batteries may last 40% longer than we previously thought?

Sure, but what I'm hearing is that the failures are largely a result of poor build quality on Tesla's part (faults such as moisture ingress). The EV experiment seems successful and has the potential for excellent reliability otherwise, assuming they're not put together by morons.

Stanford research: EV batteries may last 40% longer than we previously thought?

Interesting study. My anecdotal evidence to add to this is that the only EV batteries I've really heard people gripe about are in Leafs, especially here in Phoenix (passively cooled pack), and I have a hunch that the couple of folks I know who have PHEVs and don't charge them might have issues...

What's the difference between Valvoline Maxlife ATF and Extended Protection ATF?

Late to the party, but I had the same thought process as you - the whole steel-on-steel friction modifier thing is a bit counter-intuitive to me when it's going into a traditional step-shift. I've run both the red bottle ML AT/CVT formula and gray bottle EP without issue though. I've...

    ZF 8-Speed Groaning Noise

They are really compelling cars. Nice driving dynamics and we both hardly use gas anymore. I've been thrilled with it other than this dang noise! The 8hp is excellent. It does seem to resonate throughout the chassis. I've been thinking about fixing a camera to the service tray underneath the...

    ZF 8-Speed Groaning Noise

    A 2021 530e. My old man's got a 21 X5 45e and I have not noticed any noises when I've driven it. He's at the same mileage.

    ZF 8-Speed Groaning Noise

I think I only started to notice the transmission groan when I changed the sound generator to something more subtle (sorry, not sure how to do this on the Jeeps). It's a pretty mild noise. Perhaps just some resonance with the chassis and whatnot, but I may change the pan to see if it helps. I...

    ZF 8-Speed Groaning Noise

Great idea. We'll call it "Vehicular Hypochondriacs Anonymous." I genuinely conjured up this crackpot theory a while back to try and explain this noise from a psychological perspective: I'm extremely conditioned to listening and feeling for issues (owning a bunch of old German cars will do that...

    ZF 8-Speed Groaning Noise

Hello all, I'm diagnosing a very faint "groan" when my ZF 8P75H (Full hybrid) is near the top of second gear, and immediately goes away as it switches to third. This is accompanied by an occasional rough switch to second gear, which I've been told is normal for these transmissions. The "groan"...

FRAM Synthetic Endurance is looking a bit weak.

Certainly not. I'm happy to have learned something today, and most of all, I'm happy I can finally buy a good filter for my car at Walmart instead of buying online or making two trips. Previously they didn't have anything for me at most locations.

FRAM Synthetic Endurance is looking a bit weak.

Alright, I get it! 😂 This noob has been shown the light. I guess I was quick to judge a book by its cover because it looked different from every other filter I've used. It's going in the 535i wagon today. I'll update in 6k miles how it holds up.

    MicroGard MGL57712 product source change

O'Reilly has been switching away from WIX for their air and oil filters and going to chinese products in the past few months. I wouldn't bother with them anymore, and stick with the Vietnamese made Select filters, which are of great quality.

FRAM Synthetic Endurance is looking a bit weak.

Picked up this FE10075 FRAM Synthetic Endurance today for $13 (without looking inside the box) today at Walmart, along with some Quaker State 5w40 Euro. Is it just me or does the filter media area on this look very weak compared to pretty much every other aftermarket cartridge filter for BMW...

Under the valve cover of a $1900 BMW N54. Want your opinions

Decided to check back on this thread, thanks so much for all of your great responses. Here's an update for anyone who cares. She made it to Arizona! 30 hours and 2,000 miles was not a problem for this thing. And, best of all - It didn't, and still hasn't, used a drop of oil, even with sustained...

Under the valve cover of a $1900 BMW N54. Want your opinions

My bar is low considering I paid $1900 for a somewhat nice car that I was able to drive an hour home, so I'm elated to say that it hasn't used a drop of oil. I'm going to be driving it 2000 miles back to college in a few weeks, I suppose that will be the real test. The last four times I've made...

Under the valve cover of a $1900 BMW N54. Want your opinions

I've just bought this 2009 BMW 535xi Wagon with 158k miles for cheap (needed a valve cover, brakes, and two wheel speed sensors - $250 and an afternoon, it now runs great). However, I am a bit concerned about the condition of the top end. Looks like some thick varnish. Should I be concerned...

    MMO synthetic

Does anyone happen to know the viscosity of this new MMO synthetic? The wear scar testing they published looks promising, but it was being being compared to and tested with a grp III 0w-20.
