    brake dust sticking to wheels

I’d spray the wheels down with a little Griot’s or Meguiar’s ceramic wax after cleaning them but before rinsing the car down. Euro brake dust is magnitudes worse than Japanese/Korean “ceramic” brake dust due to the friction formulation - there’s metal and graphite in Euro pads, which tend to...

    Hardest compound

13” inch is mostly a Chineseium size and those tires tend to have softer compounds. I’d see if Hankook, Kumho or the better of the Chinesium brands(Sailun, WestLake, Milestar) has something. Though, you might able to get away with a LingLong/Leao or an Otani(Thai brand, they’re known more for...

Fram Endurance / Walmart End of Life ?

A long time ago, the filter wall at the FLAPS was all orange Fram. Then, AutoZone entered a branding agreement with STP(Energizer) and branded Champ and now Premium Guard. O’Reilly was in bed with Wix, but PG took over the Microgard catalog. Ditto with Advance/Carquest. My local WM still has...

I should grab a box or two for the van.

Where middle class families may have eaten out at before TGIFs, Applebees, etc

Around here, Sizzler ruled. And it’s making a somewhat renaissance now. But, we also went to buffets but a lot of Asian places being the in the minority - those places were all in Oakland.

New Sierra HD with 6.6 gasser ordered, wondering about cSt

Yea, the Nissan VK56DE/DD(Titan/Armada/Infiniti QX56) and Toyota 3UR-FE/FBE(Tundra/Sequoia and Lexus LX570/LC200) are rev-happy and built to be smooth, seeing their base was a luxury car V8. There’s a reason why Isuzu didn’t use a Nissan or Toyota V8 as the gas engine for their NPR trucks - they...

New Sierra HD with 6.6 gasser ordered, wondering about cSt

Oye. But then again, there’s company trucks that see only bulk D1G3 oil and there’s no stories of those blowing up… yet. I feel these GM V8s aren’t picky about oil. AFM is another thing.

    Timing belt marking pens

If I need to mark a timing belt, I’ll use a Marvy Uchida DecoColor or Markal paint pen. I like using the OEM marks though. On the rear cam of a transverse V6, there’s such a thing called parallax error so beware. The OEM belt and maybe aftermarket ones are marked for ease of install but once...

New Sierra HD with 6.6 gasser ordered, wondering about cSt

If it was me, ESP or M1 Supercar with dexosR. But I’d run M1EP or Castrol Edge FST with D1G3 certs and keep an eye out on oil temps. Because warranty. The 6.6 doesn’t have AFM on it?

I am replacing slide pin boots on every brake pad change

Molykote 111. Find it on Amazon. Grainger can also order it, your local dive shop also has it as Trident Silicone Grease. Personally, I would use Sil-Glyde or Toyota rubber grease. Anything that isn’t Permatex or CRC brake grease.

What are you working on today?

My watch said no working out today - got around to replacing the brakes on an 05 Sienna. Machine shop molested the rotors on their lathe when I had the rotors machined and introduced run out beyond Toyota spec resulting in a shimmy during freeway speed stops. Which is a shame, there were Advics...

House wrap - 30lb. felt vs Synthetic(Tyvek type stuff)

The same thing in roofing too - woven polypropylene is the preferred choice vs. 15-30lb felt. For the same reasons and it’s textured/coated to assist with traction on the roof deck. Around here, Tyvek or house wrap is used. Tar paper/felt is more for stucco.

Anyone running Large A/T tires that are "quiet"

I recommended the Firestone Destination AT2 for a friend. He wanted a AT tire with a 3PMSF rating but didn’t want to spend coin on Wildpeaks. KO2/3 was out of the question. He likes them. IMHO, if his Tundra wasn’t a “off-road” package, he would have been much better off with the Michelin X LT...

Vinfast, what on earth are you doing - VF8 and VF9 test drive and failed attempt to lease a VF8

With tariffs in play, they took a big gamble. Many automakers have a captive finance arm(Ford, Toyota - Toyota Financial also works with Mazda) or work with major banks(Subaru & Chase, Ally & GM) but the subprime market is dominated by CAC and Santander(who also worked on Uber’s financing for...

Any experiences using Shell free charging?

I was there for an hour while the car was finishing its charge - I also needed to get groceries. I did go to IKEA first and paid $3.25 to get the battery somewhat charged - it had 0 range but I got it back to 25 miles of range in two hours(I was looking at the ChargePoint app). Had lunch inside...

Any experiences using Shell free charging?

I used that same one to charge a Prius Prime service loaner. It worked, besides the nearby IKEA it was the only J1772 Level 2 AC charging point I found.

Vinfast, what on earth are you doing - VF8 and VF9 test drive and failed attempt to lease a VF8

I think this is their first homegrown effort. VinFast was using BMW for chassis and drivetrain. It’s a lot like Hyundai using Mitsubishi platforms or Daewoo using GM’s small car platform(before GM took total control of them in the 1990s).

Vinfast, what on earth are you doing - VF8 and VF9 test drive and failed attempt to lease a VF8

Give it time. Right now, besides clothes they’re expanding into tires(Kumho has a plant in Vietnam) and electronic assembly. VinFast was bootstrapped by BMW before their EV pivot. Kinda like Ssangyong was bootstrapped by Mercedes and HyunKia was dependent on Mitsu(Hyundai) and Ford/Mazda(Kia)...
