Model 3 test drive March 25

To be fair at the moment internal battery pack repairs don't seem to be an option taken by any EV maker, although old Leaf packs are easily and often repaired at independent shops. In the future it seems likely that this may become a viable business for most other EVs as well, not unlike...

    Question About Non-Synchro-First-Gear Manual Transmissions

With further research the transmission I'm describing (in post 34) seems to be a "Chevy/ GM/ Muncie 318 3-speed" rather than a Saginaw, which was just a guess. Apparently the barrel in the middle is referred to as a synchro clutch assembly and I believe it is a fairly unique design. It may not...

    Question About Non-Synchro-First-Gear Manual Transmissions

The easiest way to learn about this stuff is to obtain a scrap manual transmission from an auto recycler and tear it apart!

    Question About Non-Synchro-First-Gear Manual Transmissions

That transmission is a 3-speed with syncro on 2nd and 3rd. The synchros are just not as sophisticated as we find today.

    Question About Non-Synchro-First-Gear Manual Transmissions

You can probably find cutaway views of older transmission online but I'm not aware of a passenger car design that uses large dogs like a motorcycle, racing or heavy truck gearbox. In fact one box I disassembled as a teen (probably a Saginaw, looked exactly like the one below) did not have...

How do manufacturers choose manual trans oil weight?

Noting the thread topic, certainly there are going to be exceptions in unusual cases. But do you let that determine the rules for all cases? You won't see a design like that these days.

    Question About Non-Synchro-First-Gear Manual Transmissions

Yes, with practice, but normally there was no need to as you would come to a stop first. Generally these did not have dogs per se but the gears had rounded lead-ins and engaged sideways along splines. That did generate more wear particles than we would be used to seeing today.

How do manufacturers choose manual trans oil weight?

For an industrial gearbox, assuming gear widths are correctly designed for the required loading, the normal criteria is the highest pitch-line velocity. There is an established lubrication table of that parameter v.s. oil viscosity. My EV gearbox is a simple 2-stage reducer with the input...

UOA for Hyundai Kona Electric, high aluminium and silicon levels

Just to close off this thread for those interested, I recently discovered that the most likely reason for the black oil and high iron/aluminium UOA levels is that the gearbox internal magnet is loosely captive in the aluminium housing directly under the stream of oil off the final drive gear...

Texas Plans EV Chargers Every 50 Miles on Major Highways

The point is that the problems you speak of are not occurring in practice. Without new batteries these early Leafs are not going to be viable. I have plenty of engineering experience including battery systems, you're not the only one here, lol!

Texas Plans EV Chargers Every 50 Miles on Major Highways

Some home charger units like the Zappi have a current sensor to manage household power limits or optimise PV usage. Homes here tend to have only 60 or 100A supplies and I don't see reams of complaints about this issue. I have a 60A supply and I'd be fine with a 32A charger because there's...

Can you flat tow a Tesla?

I suspect as long as the Tesla can be placed in Drive mode it won't know that it's being towed.

UOA for Hyundai Kona Electric, high aluminium and silicon levels

I use the Penrite 70W-75 (7.5) because it's inexpensive and readily available off the shelf "down-under" while many others who DIY in N. America use the Redline MT-LV (5.4) which has an identical viscosity to the OEM 70W oil (5.4). European owners are using Liqui Moly 70W-75 (5.9). The input...

UOA for Hyundai Kona Electric, high aluminium and silicon levels

The breather labyrinth is visible in the photos higher up, doesn't look to be unusual. The oil Hyundai use I understand is Ravenol, a German brand. I'm fairly confident it's high quality and it's quite expensive at the dealer, $70+ a litre by several reports. As I've mentioned before the iron...

EV's dime a dozen? I think everyone and his brother will be making them.

Exactly ... be careful to understand the difference between particulate pollution effects which block some earthbound heat from sunlight, as opposed to increasing CO2 emission effects that increase the Earth's thermal insulation to outbound infrared heat. It's the balance of those that...

Charging an Electric Car in 1905

1908 Fritchle, 100 mile range and 10,000 mile battery life according to one description. And that's said to be the "home" charger.

    OFFICIAL: Ford F-150 “Lightning” EV

The TFL driver's reluctance to use the brake pedal on either the Lightning or hybrid surprised me as it shouldn't make any difference. I can't find an exact reference for the Lightning quickly but the F-150 Hybrid has a special regen-integrated braking system that transparently mixes regen and...

Mach E high voltage battery contactor recall...

At least it's unlikely to result in a fire. At some point an engineer mulled over a choice between the 500 A contactor and the 600 A version, that cost $10 more and then an accountant walked by ...

UOA for Hyundai Kona Electric, high aluminium and silicon levels

Yeah, at this stage the UOA with no working magnet present doesn't worry me. Later this month one owner will report back with a 10,000 km drain interval with a magnetic plug installed. A good report will confirm that there are no other underlying issues. Thanks for tracking down those useful...

UOA for Hyundai Kona Electric, high aluminium and silicon levels

We just a diligent new Kona EV owner change their gear oil at only 142 km, barely out of the showroom. As reported, the oil looked tainted black initially then the original clear brown colour party came back a few days later as particles settled out. Placing a magnet on the side of the bottle...
